Minnesota Sen. Al Franken will resign from the United States Senate "in the coming weeks" he announced Thursday, a day after a number of his Democratic colleagues called for him to step down amid mounting allegations of sexual misconduct against women.

"Today I am announcing that in the coming weeks, I will be resigning as a member of the United States Senate," Franken said on the Senate floor. "It's become clear that I can't both pursue the Ethics Committee process and at the same time remain an effective senator for [the people of Minnesota]."

Other headlines here lacked "in coming weeks".

This is the longest resignation in history? And it may not happen at all. 32 Dem Senator call for him to resign. "Immediately" seemed implied but no Democrats seem to mind he will resign when he wants to. I call BS

Franken is hanging around until after Moore is elected and is sworn in to the Senate.
He’ll play it as an issue and if he resigns he’ll say how noble he is to do so
but Moore has not ethics, etc. It’s politics as usual in today’s environment.

I read comments from others here earlier today saying about how it was typical, half assed nonsense from Franken. And that the speech he gave was a pretty pathetic one too.

Can any woman in this country close her eyes to sleep and feel safe while Al Franken is still free?

He’s waiting to see if Moore wins. If he does, then Franken will say “My resignation will become effective the same day as Roy Moore’s.”
