Fix the white-knuckle obstacle course on I-95 | Editorial
The Florida Sun Sentinel ^ | December 8, 2017 | The Sun Sentinel Editorial Board

The congestion and construction on Interstate 95 are frustrating enough, but navigating the dramatically uneven lanes that make your car shimmy, shake and swerve into neighboring lanes is downright dangerous.

Yet as the Sun Sentinel’s Wayne Roustan reported Sunday, the Florida Department of Transportation says we’re going to have to endure this nightmare through parts of Broward and Palm Beach counties until 2024.

Come on, FDOT. You’re killing us.

Well, we can’t really say you’re killing us because, believe it or not, state transportation officials can’t tell us how many accidents have occurred during the construction of the I-95 express lanes in Broward, which will eventually stretch from Stirling Road in Hollywood to Linton Boulevard in Delray Beach.

An FDOT spokeswoman says the agency doesn’t collect that information and the Florida Highway Patrol says it could take weeks to research. That transportation officials don’t track such a critical statistic suggests a new dashboard is needed for managing public safety.

For as any motorist or motorcyclist using this stretch of highway knows, the sudden 1.5- to 3-inch differences in road lanes — coupled with crazy curves and patches of rough grades — are enough to give you a heart attack.

In some stretches, mismatched heights occur within the same lane, making you feel like a skater on one leg.

Hey, Gov. Rick Scott! Have you taken a ride on this white-knuckle obstacle course managed by your managers?

If you believe in running government like a business, we encourage you to listen to your customers. Do something about the drop-offs between lanes. Make the slopes more gradual between newly paved portions. Add better striping. Alert drivers of the hazards. Manage how fast traffic is flowing . . .

Faced with this on I-95, I chose to use Florida’s Turnpike and pay for the privilege rather than deal with it.

FTA:

"Hey, Gov. Rick Scott!...Manage how fast traffic is flowing . . ."

Gov. Rick Scott will find that NOTHING will "manage" a determined Miami/Broward/Palm Beach driver!

Orlando was like this years ago. They were building those crazy curved overpasses that are 40 foot above other highways. Something I had only seen on tv and it was LA. The daily commuters in FL would still do 65-70mph in their brand new cars but here I was in an old truck, sometimes an old 2 ton truck with manual steering trying to stay in my reduced width lane, sometimes with a three foot concrete wall on one side and sometimes that temporary wall wasn’t laid out too well. Sometimes the difference in the height of the pavement was 4-6 inches. Sometimes is was straight down one lane but sometimes it would suddenly go across to the opposite lane.

That was one of the straws that broke the camel’s back and made me move to flyover country. I still go to the city once or twice a year and hate it.

And when it’s dark, people that know the road really well and have nice handling, new cars and are always in a hurry will tailgate you with their left headlight peaking around to blind you in the side view mirror. If it’s a full sized PU truck or SUV, you also get blinded in the rear view mirror.
