John Skipper resigned as president of ESPN and co-chairman of the Disney Media Networks on Monday.
George Bodenheimer, ESPN's president from 1998-2011 and its executive chairman until May 2014, will take over as the acting chairman of the company for the next 90 days to help Disney chairman and chief executive officer Bob Iger find Skipper's replacement.

"I have disclosed that decision to the company, and we mutually agreed that it was appropriate that I resign. I will always appreciate the human understanding and warmth that Bob displayed here and always.

Unfortunately the Disney-Fox deal has bought them a reprieve.

There MUST be a lot more involved here, e.g., pending serious accusations against him, etc.
No one resigns so abruptly from such a senior corporate executive position AND cites personal substance abuse issues, unless they are trying to escape even more serious problems.
If he were not trying to build sympathy for his situation he would simply take a leave of absence for “reasons of health” that might turn into a permanent departure later. His immediate departure while citing substance abuse problems suggests there is a lot more to this.
