California was sued earlier this month over poor reading skills among its students, a significant legal step in trying to combat lackluster literacy rates amid a larger conversation about education policy in the Golden State.

Who are they suing? Me a legal resident and taxpayer in California? Why not sue Mexico for dumping huge numbers of poorly educated non-English speaking children into the state? Why not sue the teachers union, Whole Language, Common Core, bilingual education, and the whole social justice curriculum? Nope they are going to sue the California taxpayer. Figures.

Nothing will change until the teacher’s unions are dismantled, and parents take responsibility for their litters.

It seems to me that the lawsuit should be filed against everyone involved in preventing prop 187 from being implemented. CA voters voted for prop 187 because they understood the problems with encouraging illegal immigration and did not want to have to foot the bill to pay for illegal alien children to attend school.

How much more of the available education money would be spent on educating CA children if it weren’t for so much of it being diverted to illegal alien children who arrive uneducated, unready for school, and unable to speak English? How much could property taxes be lowered if school attendance was restricted to legal resident and citizen children?

The people who filed suit against 187 and prevented it from ever being implemented should be held liable for the resulting damage.

FWIW, Mexico and other Latino countries have schools from elementary up through university. Those children can be educated in their home countries, where they actually speak the language and can learn.

Actually, teachers are part of the suits, that is, they are the plaintiffs in the case. It will be interesting how this pans out. If successful, I may be able to sue my employer when I do a poor job.

No problem! Just lower the college entrance requirements for literacy. CA is already doing it for math - http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/3614920/posts

Teachers’ unions? You don’t have a problem with state and federal government running the show? Name anything that is government controlled that is well run?

So you are saying, that in California, nothing will change. The teachers’ unions are an institution that will stand until the end of time, and only a small percentage of the delinquent parents will EVER take responsibility for their spawn. And only after that spawn is imprisoned.

If anybody even goes to prison any more, at least for the crimes against property or bodily harm upon another. Now thoughtcrime, that is another story. Diversity of opinion is not permitted.

Wouldn’t a “pro bono law firm” go out of business in relatively short order?

Need more Affirmative Action. Arbitrarily raise the grades of all non-white, non-asian students until everyone passes. Now everyone is literate!!

If you include character as part of education, I would agree. That said, normal aspects of character formation were made optional before mathematical literacy became optional.

Name anything that is government controlled that is well run?

I spent yesterday afternoon in line at the post office. At 5pm they locked the doors. There were about 40 people in the inner part of the building, others in the outer lobby. Those people in the lobby - even though they were in line in the building - they were turned away.

According to our local radio station, the median salary of the full time postal workers is $80,000. Think about that the next time you have to deal with a surly counter worker. With their poor service, theft of mail and that 3rd class junk mail, the USPS needs to be shut-down.

California is on the cutting edge of every social change and it then usually creeps across the nation. I lived in CA for twenty years. I remember being incredulous when a El Ed teacher friend told me, in the mid 90’s, that she could not hold back any student, FOR ANY REASON, if the parents declined to sign a permission slip for her to do so. I (of course) replied ‘but what if the can’t do the work?’. She said she still couldn’t hold the student back. Social Promotion has been a terrible policy inflicted on our children. Instituted first in California..........now causing problems all across the USA.
