“I bought up a large cashe of them a few years back when I first heard of this stupidity. I have enough to last the rest of my lifetime.”

So did I. And wasn’t GW the one who signed the original law?

I live in California. I know how this works. I’d never suggest lowered costs of anything in this state.

Witness they just raised the gas tax. Now they want to levy a ‘per miles driven’ tax on top of it.

It’s a never ending story of new and higher fees in California.

So far the poor saps who pay these bills and vote Democrat all the time, haven’t figured it out.

“Remember when car tires had tubes?? Things change. Would you all rather have the tube ones?? Get real. “

The market takes care of these things naturally. Government....GTFO!

There’s gonna be a great many cool, attractive and fun LED lighting options ahead.

I was born about a mile from where I live. I spent 27 years working in the hospital/medical center I was born in.

At the age of three I had an independent streak, and decided to move to Missouri. I lived there for 15 years, with 9 month spells in Arkansas and Texas.

I love my home state of California. It has an incredible potential. Despite all the carp the Leftist toss at it and it’s citizens, it refuses to give up the ghost.

It is an amazing state from one end to the other.

My wife and I are sold on LED light bulbs inside and out. Soft, bright light.

Almost every bulb we burn on the farm is LED now.

You definitely need to try the newer LEDs. Lowes has a cheap brand called utilitech that are pretty good. Last time I was there, I grabbed GE by accident. 100 watts of light for 13 watt cost. The 60 watt utilitech are good for indoors and they use 8.5 watts. Just about the same color as incandescent. I bought the 100 watt to put in one of those clamp on, aluminum reflector fixtures. That sucker puts out some light. I’m going to get more and light my shop with them.

My apartment project just replaced all our permanent fixtures with LEDs and they will likely outlive me.

I suppose that's the good news and the bad news...

These are what I replaced the old bulb style fixtures in our boat with. They’re very nice.

Love 100 watt equivalent LEDs except for the price.

...

In some cases you may be able to use a socket splitter and two 60w bulbs.

Outside is fine except the LED bulbs NEVER last as long as advertised.

What’s the difference if you put a shade around them?

I prefer LEDs - they are brighter for less juice, and don’t make heat. As my incandescents burn out I am replacing them with LEDs.

Like everyone else, I was angry when the Bush admin allowed incandescent bulbs to be phased out. Funny thing, though - I can still buy incandescents at my local Wally World, along with fluorescents, halogens and LEDs. Dropping costs and market preference are driving sales of LED’s, which is the way it should be - gov’t action had no effect other than to drive the last incandescent factories out.

CFL bulbs have a weird character to their light ...

They have a discrete spectrum, which you can see just by holding a diffraction grating close to your eye, and looking to the top or bottom, away from the light. You will see a sequence of distinct monochromatic images of the exposed portion of the bulb. A deep violet, a deep blue, an aquamarine, a green, then a fainter spread of yellow to red, with a distinct bright red image embedded in it.

I just checked this with my diffraction grating which I keep handy at all times :-)

We recently got LED streetlights, and their spectrum is broken, but has long continuous ranges. It's still qualitatively different from the household incandescent spectrum, which is continuous, and peaks in the infrared, which gives it a bright red tail. I can still see plenty of green, blue, and violet, though. ( Spectral violet looks "purple" to me, although technically purple is a mixture of spectral red and blue. )

Hmmm. Somewhere, I have a pocket spectroscope. I need to try that.
