Forrest stated that any man that would fight along side him he would consider as equal. The Cavalry he joined as a private, 7th Tennessee C.S.A., was 5% blacks. At Pillow there were many factors that led to the high number of casualties; the Unionists of the 6th Tenn and 13th Tenn had been killing POWs, even skinning them alive, they had been robbing the locals (many of the homes belonging to Forrest's men), the cavalrymen were armed with two .36 Navy revolvers and the Unionists with rifled muzzle loaders, and the Union troops, both black and white, were ordered to not surrender because a "trap" was set for the attackers that was foreseen by Forrest and resulted in mass casualties. The newspaper in Memphis, The Avalanche was ordered to report the incident as a "massacre" so that blacks would fight harder believing they would be mercilessly murdered if captured (resulting in a tenacious rear guard at Brice's Crossroads). I had a lengthy discussion with James McPherson about this in which he agreed that much of what is written in black history books is biased and incorrect.

As a life long Memphian, I can say this:
December 20, 2017 - the night racism ended in Memphis. The biggest impedimen to progress and racial harmony, those statues, are gone. I don’t ever want to hear about racism in Memphis ever again. The cause for it has been erased from sight. One other thing, since they’ve been erased from memory, then slavery never existed. There are no reminders of that institution.

My GGGF was in the 6th Tennessee and lived in Rose Creek, Tennessee, along the route where the Unionists killed a Confederate and tortured them at every mile marker from Pocohontas to Purdy. Alex Haley and I were working on this incident when he died and the project died with him.

This is a quasi Private/City Government run Entity that works for the city, they sold the parks for $1,000 with stipulation that they were to remain PUBLIC parks. They are suppose to ‘maintain, police these parks.’ This Entity does not have the funds to maintain then parks, police them, etc. Their sole purpose is promotion of the City especially Beale St. It is DEM controlled to boot and receive funds from the City tax payers per the Memphis City Council, and the Shelby Co Commission.

I lived in Shelby CO for over 25 yrs, and all our news comes out of Memphis. Thankfully we moved into Tipton Co 4 yrs ago.
