GOP gains leverage over Democrats in January spending battle

Republicans this week managed to pass critical short-term spending bills without requiring any help from Democrats, an achievement that GOP lawmakers said will give them new leverage as they head into major spending negotiations next year.

“The Democrats now know we can put up the votes if we need to,” Rep. Bill Flores, R-Texas, told the Washington Examiner. “So they can either play in the wilderness or sit down at the table like adults.”

Past spending battles have often required compromise with House Democrats because the GOP could not round up enough support from conservative lawmakers seeking spending reductions or making other demands.

They need to spend more time huddled in the basement.

Maybe...just maybe they can start to shift the legislation a bit to the right.

Addition by subtraction; there was no John McCain affecting the last few votes. Consider it a preview of how much better things will be for America when he is no longer a member of the Senate, and we have to wait for him to be not there before stuff gets done.

Leverage is only of benefit if you know how and are willing to use it.

Don't tell me that they have finally realized that the biggest fear they face is Republican voters tired of their whimiping out, selling out, and drinking with their K-street friends, and that their biggest enemy in the world is they themselves.

Don’t tell me the GOPeeers have abandoned “bipartisanship,” finally. Where’s the give the Democrats what they want, and they will think about giving you something back, spirit of cooperation?
