List: These 32 Senators Voted to Shut Down the Government Before Christmas (Franken's last vote?)
Western Journalism ^ | 12/22/17 | Thomas Phippen

The Senate approved a short-term spending plan to keep the government open Thursday but not without nearly a third of the chamber dissenting for various reasons.

The funding bill, called a continuing resolution, keeps the government open through mid-January.

The legislation needed at least 60 votes and passed by 66 votes, with 32 nays and two senators not voting. That’s double the 14 Democrats who dissented against the temporary spending bill two weeks ago.

Most of the nay votes were from Democrats who are desperate to deal with immigration issues.

I’d vote nay as well! These sorry a@@ excuses for legislators couldn’t manage a lemonade stand let alone a budget they’ve had YEARS to get passed. We haven’t had a federal budget in what 10+years!?

This Congress as well as the last 5 have been sorry excuses of excrement

Let me guess, the democrats who voted to fund the bill are all up for election in 2018?

If Congress is in recess, then move on the appointments.

“This Congress as well as the last 5 have been sorry excuses of excrement”

If you’re familiar with the process of arbitration, it’s a negotiation where nobody is satisfied in the end. This is what happens with every bill that goes through Congress. It isn’t their fault. It’s the system that the Founders set up to prevent any one group from dictating to everybody. It does work. But whoever said Americans should never see their sausages made or their bills legislated got it right.

“If Congress is in recess, then move on the appointments.”

I have a hunch Trump cut a deal to not make any recess appointments as part of the cut negotiations.

"Bernice Sanders (I-VT), Nay"

They call Bernie an Independent to avoid the more accurate, but less comfortable term, Communist.

I see the lack of budget as a symptom of the growing bloat and dysfunction of government. The government has grown too large, has gotten itself involved in too many areas that were never part of its constitutional mandate (e.g. wealth redistribution aka "welfare"). It is so bloated that the task of coming up with a budget is nearly impossible.

With Trump's cutting of regulations and paring the government back down to its Constitutional functions, coming up with a budget should become doable again.

Thanks. Yes I did.

Here are some notes:

http://www.sltrib.com/news/politics/2017/12/20/heres-the-provision-that-could-keep-utahs-sen-mike-lee-from-voting-to-stop-a-government-shutdown-this-week/

Here’s the provision that could keep Utah’s Sen. Mike Lee from voting to stop a government shutdown this week

Lee has used the threat before — and was instrumental in the 2013 government shutdown.

Utah Sen. Mike Lee is threatening to vote against a spending bill that would prevent a government shutdown this week if the package includes a longterm extension for a surveillance program he fears incidentally spies on American citizens.

Lee stands with another Republican, Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky — lending some real leverage to the ultimatum as the GOP holds a slim majority in the Senate. The two are asking for debate on Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA), a U.S. data collection effort meant to pick up international communications.

They fear permanent reauthorization for the program, set to expire Dec. 31, could be swept up in the rushed effort to extend government funding, which has the more immediate deadline of Friday at midnight.

“We are not truly secure unless our privacy is respected,” Lee said during a Tuesday news conference.

As it stands, Lee and Paul believe FISA can be abused to prosecute individuals domestically. The two were joined by Republican Sen. Steve Daines and Democratic Sens. Ron Wyden and Patrick Leahy, who suggested the program be certified in the short term before debating potential reform in January.

The group has the support of the American Civil Liberties Union and the conservative advocacy group Freedom Works.
