I would settle for a complete and truthful accounting at least for history. Scoundrals and criminals need to be ferreted out.
When the history of the world and one of its major national entities is written and extensively reviewed, by some scholar centuries from now, the names and deeds shall be laid bare for the world to see, much as the corruption of Imperial Rome or Byzantium managed to crumble both from within, even before they were overrun by barbarian hordes.
What were once seen as heroes and steadfast leaders, shall be shown to be charlatans and complete counterfeits, while others once regarded as humble and relatively meaningless in the greater scheme will emerge as the true benefactors and paragons of peace and prosperity, preserving for a time the noble aspirations of the basis on which the nation was founded.
History will sift out the winners and losers, but only if we keep some semblance of reality preserved for later generations to peruse and gain their own insights.
