Erie gets record snowfall during Christmas blizzard
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette ^ | December 26, 2017

The good news for many in the Northeast and Midwest was that it was a white Christmas. The bad news was that a blizzard swept into parts of New England and bitter cold enveloped much of the Midwest.

Erie, Pa., recieved a record 34 inches of snow.

NWS Cleveland ✔ @NWSCLE Erie, PA received 34" of snow on Christmas Day! This is a new all-time daily snowfall record. The previous record was 20" set on 11/22/56. For reference, the greatest 3-day snowfall in Erie was 30.2" (12/29-31/2002), greatest 7-day snowfall is 39.8" (12/27/01-1/2/2002) #pawx 1:26 AM - Dec 26, 2017

And another 19 inches fell before dawn Tuesday, bringing the total to 53 inches — the greatest two-day total in commonwealth history. The previous record was the 44 inches that fell in Morgantown in March 1958.

And it’s not over for Erie - the snow is expected to continue falling through Wednesday. The city of Erie issued a snow emergency, citing “dangerous and impassable” roads, and asked residents to stay off city streets until the snow stops and roads can reopen.

State police and the Department of Transportation are urging people to avoid travel, citing poor visibility and deteriorating conditions.

I remember driving to Erie in a snow storm. Can’t imagine what it would be like in that amount of snow. Stuck on I-90 comes to mind.

Yes, lake effect snow in winter is obviously Trump’s fault. :D

This has to be FAKE NEWS, I saw AlGore and Leonardo DiCaprio swear up and down that the US will NEVER see snow again because of uncontrolled, runaway man made global warming.

Stuck on I-90 comes to mind.

Happened to me and my family in the 70s, I think 1976. We were in our 1973 Ford F250 (2wd). It had a huge camper in the bed and we were on the way back to Ohio from a Vermont ski trip. We got south of Buffalo on 90 and that, as they say, was that. Fortunately, the truck had two gas tanks that were full. We were stationary for around 15 hours. There was 24+ inches of snow on the highway so we "camped" heh.

Southern Erie County NY got slammed with 6 feet of snow in Nov. 2016

Erie PA got slammed with 5 feet yesterday.

Most of the time its really nice to live next to the beautiful Great Lakes, but sometimes, there’s a price to pay....

We lived near Syracuse during the blizzard of '66. 42.3 inches of snow in Syracuse and a staggering 102 inches on lakefront Oswego County. We were in the Fayetteville-Manlius area and got close to 60 inches dumped on us.

Mom and Dad ran out of smokes so it was a huge crisis. They sent my sister and me to the end of our subdivision to retrieve a "cig care package" that somebody dropped off in our mailbox on the main road. Life was tough back then before global warming ruined everything.

One household here in Park City is doing their part to save winter. Maybe they couldn't think of a good hash tag.

Yeah, I'm a little skeptical. Right on the lake, and 30" is a record? My parents talk about getting 8 feet in blizzards upstate, back in the 60s.

I've seen the pictures. Looked miserable.

heh, see my post #13. I suspect that you, and Mom and Dad, shoveled that same snow.

White misery. I don't miss it a bit.

I think that was the snowstorm that we didn’t see a snowplow for 3 days afterwards.

It is a record for snow falling on Dec 25. More may have fallen on other days.
