Two Layers of Graphene Make Diamond-Hard Armor That Can Stop a Bullet
Futurism ^ | Dec 21, 2017 | Kyree Leary

IAMOND-HARD ARMOR The media tends to depict bullet-proof armor as something that’s thick and heavier than regular clothes. Despite being for bodily protection, the added bulk of that armor might restrict a person’s movements. But scientists at the City University of New York’s Advanced Science Research Center (ASRC) have found that diamond-hard armor doesn’t need to be thick. The key to less-bulky protection is graphene, a tightly-packed layer of bonded carbon atoms one million times thinner than a piece of paper.

The researchers discovered that two layers of graphene stacked on top of one another can temporarily become as hard as diamond — and just as impenetrable — when struck by, say, a bullet. The hardening of the new material, called diamene, only happens when exactly two sheets of graphene are layered together, according to the study published in Nature Nanotechnology. When more sheets were added, the hardening effect didn’t happen.

Will have to start inserting bullets manually.

Ironically, effective bullet-proof armor won’t count for much if no one’s using bullets anymore.

That's not irony - it's a simple fact.

It may be able to stop a bullet from penetrating the armor, but the force of the impact will still be there. It might be spread out by dissipation over a larger surface, but that can still do some very serious (even lethal) damage.

When hard, this same stuff would invisibly slice through your body long before you could ever realize it.

With graphenes conductive properties what effect does a TASER have on this?

Industrial production of graphene is going to change society as much as integrated circuits have.

Deer hunting just became a heckuva lot harder.

Stopping the bullet doesn’t particularly mean zero transference of force. Armor that thin will need thicker materials to reduce the shock of impact

In fact, you could have invisible knives made of this stuff and have people walk into it and cut themselves completely in half.

How do you see a 1.5 atom-think, diamond hard substance, from the short side?

The age of the firearm is rapidly drawing to a close.>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Soon we will be back to bows and arrows, they will pierce such armor, LOL.

But if you could take a 308 bullet that is stopped by such graphene armour, there will still be massive damage du to the mass and momentum of the stopped bullet, You get hit in the chest and you will have broken ribs and likely some internal concussive damage.

But abandoning the gun is a great idea. We would be back inthe era of swords etc. Not such a bad thing.

With developments like this, the governments of the world will outlaw the processes except for their military, and LEOs, of course...............
