'He's Already Done Enough To Get My Vote Again': The President Remains A Celebrated 'Fighter'
Business Insider/AP ^ | 12-27-2017 | Claire Galofaro, Associated Press

SANDY HOOK, Ky. (AP) — The regulars amble in before dawn and claim their usual table, the one next to an old box television playing the news on mute.

Steven Whitt fires up the coffee pot and flips on the fluorescent sign in the window of the Frosty Freeze, his diner that looks and sounds and smells about the same as it did when it opened a half-century ago. Coffee is 50 cents a cup, refills 25 cents. The pot sits on the counter, and payment is based on the honor system.

People like it that way, he thinks. It reminds them of a time before the world seemed to stray away from them, when coal was king and the values of the nation seemed the same as the values here, in God's Country, in this small county isolated in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains.

Everyone in town comes to his diner for nostalgia and homestyle cooking. And, recently, news reporters come from all over the world to puzzle over politics — because Elliott County, a blue-collar union stronghold, voted for the Democrat in each and every presidential election for its 147-year existence.

Until Donald Trump came along and promised to wind back the clock.

"He was the hope we were all waiting on, the guy riding up on the white horse. There was a new energy about everybody here," says Whitt.

"I still see it."

Despite the president's dismal approval ratings and lethargic legislative achievements, he remains profoundly popular here in these mountains, a region so badly battered by the collapse of the coal industry it became the symbolic heart of Trump's white working-class base.

I just posted this comment on another thread:

"I've seen people in NW Florida with permanent Trump signs in their yards. I mean nice (professional looking) signs, some with landscaping and lighting.(Albeit rural areas) "

He had quite a year, especially with all the swamp resistance for positive change. The approval numbers are bunk; media driven nonsense.

Obama didn’t have high ratings for most of his presidency, and he lost the mid-term elections.

This just shows yet again, that the media in the New York/Washington axis, are so insulated/isolated from the real world the rest of us live in.

The only way he would lose my vote is if he gets suckered into a bad deal on DACA.

With all the discussions about polls they should at least look at the results from time to time. In Virginia they had the Repuke surging and some had in the lead. He lost by 10. Georgia had the boy wonder behind by .2 and he lost by closer to 4. Alabama had Moore up by 10 and down by 10 and he lost by less than 1%. The polls are clueless. They live because people always forget how wrong they are.

DACA “kids” aren’t going to be deported. That was NEVER going to happen and you won’t find anyone to deport them. Even if no deal happens and deportations start you’ll get a lot of bad publicity and the pace will be a snails pace. If Trump gets an immigration agreement because of DACA it will be a HUGE win. If he gets rid of chain migration, funds the wall and changes the rules so that immigration is merit based (getting rid of things like the lottery along the way) that should only be seen as a massive win. I remind everyone, the DACA “kids” aren’t getting deported no matter what. If he can use that as a chip, it’s brilliant.

There is only one winning deal to be made on DACA.

700,000 already enrolled get a green card in exchange for complete wall funding, end anchor babies, end chain migration, mandatory e-verify for work and benefits, massively increased funding for expedited removals starting with the parents of the amnestied.

Not sure what that means as deportations already does happen. You want to speed it up, great I would ask for it but that's not a deal breaker for me. I would add a merit based system to this. The flow of legal immigration has to be controlled as well.

Don’t bother reading the article, it’s garbage. I’ll give you the main points. People in a small KY town don’t have squat but love President Trump because they’re all stupid white Christians. It’s bad and it won’t get any better but the people are too stupid to blame Trump. That about sums it up.
