Erie, Pennsylvania pummeled by record 5 feet of snow

(Reuters) - Snow piled up in Erie, Pennsylvania, on Wednesday after two days of record-breaking snowfall that had already surpassed 5 feet (1.5 meters), breaking city and state records, according to the National Weather Service.

Though residents are used to winter snow squalls blowing in from adjacent Lake Erie, which straddles the border with Canada, the Christmas storm is already one for the ages.

"This is an incredible amount of snow that we're trying to move," the Erie Police Department said in statement after the city declared a "snow emergency" on Tuesday, imploring people to stay off the streets.

Maybe Pennsylvania should SUE California and New York for their Global Warming Policies that are Plunging the Earth into another Ice Age.

Actually, the warm autumn is a cause of freaky snow. Lake Erie was warm, and extremely frigid Artic air mass blew over it, causing massive evaporation and snow. Now that the weather is so cold, the lake should freeze and produce less snow.

It's weather instability, but this week certainly is not global warming.

Good post. A lot of folks are surprised to learn that “lake effect snow” in upstate New York is much more common in late autumn and early spring than the dead of winter.

Yeah, yeah, yeah....Tug Hill in NYS routinely gets 3-5 feet of lake effect fluff (and it is fluff) and nobody bats an eye.

While all of this was going on in Erie, Tug Hill was getting blasted too.

5 feet of lake effect snow settles into about 15 inches in a few days. Even less after a week.

Can’t quite say been there, but definitely done that.

Grew up in the Buffalo area and lived in the snow belt south of Lake Ontario for too many years.

Lake effect snow can be incredibly localized. It depends on what direction the wind is coming off the lakes. Usually Buffalo gets creamed but when the wind is more out of the north, that's when places like Erie can get it. You can have several feet of snow pile up just a few miles away from where there is next to nothing.

There are only three places in the world that get lake-effect snow. The Great Lakes, Hudson Bay, and some Japanese islands whose name I can't remember (and too lazy to Google).
