NY state, foundations poured money into Syracuse grocery that has closed. Again.

Eat to Live, the food cooperative on the city's South Side, has closed again.

It's the second time in about four years the member grocery store - which was built with more than $1 million dollars in donations from Syracuse University and other area foundations - has shut its doors.

The Dec. 31 closure comes after New York state also invested more than $400,000 into the project, money meant to jumpstart the store's operations and create enough work for four full-time employees....

troubles plagued the market from the beginning. Within a couple of weeks of opening, the general manager at the time was fired. Within two months of that 2013 opening, the store closed. By February 2014, a former board member said the place was running out of money....

The co-op stayed closed until April 2016, when it got an injection of help...the state sent the $400,000 it promised in taxpayer money for the project....

Now, with the store closed, it's possible the state will ask for that money back.

Good luck with that.

I don’t think bankruptcy means what they think it means.

Probably no middle eastern or far eastern people involved. You cannot start a project like this without the owner being on sight.

They were probably trying to sell quinoa, tofu, and kefir to a clientele who preferred fried chicken, skittles, and 40s.

Perhaps the Syracuse business school should have shown them that there was no strategy that would make this a successful venture. Communism doesn’t work.

They live in food deserts because they shoplift stores into bankruptcy.

The larger goal for Eat to Live called for putting an affordable grocery store with fresh produce into a "food desert" on South Salina Street. Instead of creating a traditional for-profit business, leaders formed a co-op, meaning members would run the store and share in any future profits.

In the end, despite other grocery stores being a mile or farther away from Eat to Live, not enough people shopped at the co-op.

What do you know, another socialist failure.

None of the ‘members’ actually put any of their own money in to this business so it should be no surprise that the business failed.

My guess is that this store failed because of high rates of product shrinkage. Namely that the employees are stealing the store’s food and giving it away.

The story does not say why the first manager was fired. My guess is that he caught an employee stealing and fired that employee which caused a problem with one of the organizers of this social experiment.

Hchampaign said it right. You cannot start a project like this without the owner being on sight.

Someone with serious skin in the game and authority to fire bad performing employees and make decisions has to be on the premises. Grocery stores operate on thin profit margins and are fiercely competitive.

Note that there is another private grocery store a mile away from this market in the “food desert” and this subsidized grocery store can not compete.

Let’s face it this store is not needed and can not compete because it is operated by people with no interest in its success.
