Controversial former Sheriff Joe Arpaio on Wednesday called former President Barack Obama's birth certificate a "phony document" in an interview on CNN.
"No doubt about it, we have the evidence, I'm not going to go into all the details, yeah, it's a phony document," Arpaio said on "Cuomo Primetime."
Arpaio announced Tuesday that he is running for the Arizona US Senate seat currently occupied by Sen. Jeff Flake, who is retiring from Congress at the end of his term.
He was a staunch supporter of President Donald Trump during the campaign, and was pardoned by the President in August. The former Maricopa County sheriff was convicted for defying a court order to stop racially profiling Latinos, and he has been widely criticized for his hard-line stances on immigration.
Arpaio has touted "birtherism" in the past, and, when speaking to CNN's Chris Cuomo on Wednesday evening, said he has proof that Obama's birth certificate is fake.
"We have the evidence, nobody will talk about it, nobody will look at it, and anytime you want to come down or anybody we'll be glad to show you the evidence," Arpaio said.
Cuomo pressed Arpaio again on the topic: "So you believe that President Obama's birth certificate is a phony?"
"No doubt about it," Arpaio said.

If you liked Roy Moore you’re going to love Joe Arpaio.
Obama and his “birth certificate” are as phony as the day is long.
Of course the one that they passed off on the WH website was provably a phony BC.
Has anyone seen the real one? (Crickets.)
I believe you, Sheriff.
why is he wasting cycles on this dead issue?
We're still waiting, aren't we?
Would someone from Arizona please drag this moron off the political stage?
It may very well be fake, but that’s not a winning platform.
Two times HI state registrar, Alvin Onaka, was asked by state Secretaries of State to verify Obama’s HI “birth facts”, and 2 times he refused to do so, which is only allowable if there is in fact no legally-valid HI BC for Obama.
The reason the world thinks otherwise is because Loretta Fuddy, HDOH Director at the time, used the official HDOH seal - 2 1/4” in diameter and having a star between upper and lower banks of words around the perimeter - to make it appear that the “verifications” were certified by Onaka. The Director’s seal MUST have the director’s signature nearby to certify a document.
IOW, those “verifications” touted as ending the question once and for all were not certified. And yes, they do end the question once and for all: Onaka refused to verify the birth facts or the existence of a valid HI BC, and the only lawful reason for him to do so is if there is none.
CNN needs to issue a retraction for the last line of this story: “Obama was born in Hawaii.” Without a valid HI BC, the birthplace of Obama is unknown; only a court can sort out the evidence and make a finding of where he was born, unless he has a valid BC from somewhere besides Hawaii, in which case that BC is prima facia evidence and the legal presumption is that he was born there.
Everyone of Roy Moore’s accusers were proven to be liars. Forensic document experts proved that 0bama’s birth certificate was a clumsy forgery.
Maybe the Democrat “news” shills are baiting him into.
Please take your narcissistic, sensationalist sh!t and get lost.
And while you're at it, please share with us a list of all your Democrat donors who are pushing your candidacy because they could beat you even if they ran a candidate from ISIS.

Like Sara Huckabee Sanders said, it’s where NO ONE will ever find it.......buried in hillary’s 30,000 e-miles.
Send investigators to question Ms Fuddy.
Remember when the old CNN President said that Hawaii can’t produce birth certificates, so the issue is dead. Then in 2011, Obama showed it, even though it was fake.
Thank God AZ doesn’t have an open primary.
I suspect the reason he is “wasting cycles” on this is probably because some liberal reporter, wanting to remind the liberal base of just how “extreme” he is, asked the question.
wouldn’t the Clinton machine have sniffed this out back in the day?
CNN is using the issue as a cudgel against Arpaio.
CUOMO: Let's look at it in a different way. You're kind of reintroducing yourselves to the voters there. Is there regret that you hold in your heart for conditions the people were kept in? The nature of immigration enforcement? The birtherism claims about President Obama, things that are black marks on your record. Do you have regret? Do you have any change on any of those?CNN - Jan 10, 2018
ARPAIO: Well, you know, Frank Sinatra says "My Way" regret, so I few (INAUDIBLE) and I will repeat that to you. But with no -- I have no regrets. We did the right thing. My people did the right thing, we were very successful throughout my 24-year tenure, the longest-serving sheriff in the history of Maricopa County. No, I don't have a regret, a few mistakes, yes. Everybody makes mistakes.
CUOMO: Was the birtherism a mistake?
ARPAIO: Oh, now you're bringing that up.
CUOMO: Why wouldn't I?
ARPAIO: I'm going to tell you s something.
CUOMO: Do you think it doesn't matter? You want to be a U.S. senator and you were part of a campaign to delegitimize a president of the United States? Matters, you know.
ARPAIO: No, I started this because of fake document -- a government document. I didn't care where the president came from. I didn't care at all. That we had the evidence, nobody will talk about it, nobody will look at it. And anytime you want to come down, or anybody we'll be glad to show you the evidence.
[21:40:01] And by the way you'll -- you're going to hear more about this fake --
CUOMO: Do you believe that President Obama's birth certificate is a phony?
ARPAIO: No doubt about it. No doubt about it. We had the evidence, I'm not going to go into all the details.
CUOMO: You know, even Donald Trump now says that --
ARPAIO: It's a phony document.
CUOMO: -- that he believes that the president was born in this country, right?
ARPAIO: He never said about a fake birth certificate, that's the only thing I was trying to prove.
It’s kind of like talking about how you are going to close the barn door, after the horse not only got out but won the Kentucky Derby.
