Did Dolly Parton Banish “Dixie” Over Political Correctness?
Townhall.com ^ | January 11, 2018 | Todd Starnes

Posted on 01/12/2018 6:10:48 AM PST by Kaslin

Dolly Parton’s famous “Dixie Stampede” just got trampled by a politically correct mob.

The popular dinner show with locations in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee and Branson, Missouri, will now be called, “Dolly Parton’s Stampede.”

For nearly 30 years, the Dixie Stampede has been a family-friendly dinner show attraction — featuring great food and expert horsemanship — steeped in Civil War history. The Starnes family has attended on numerous occasions (we sat on the Southern side).

It’s unclear what – specifically – Miss Dolly will be stampeding in the culturally-cleansed revision. And it’s also not clear why the sudden name change (but I have a suspicion).

“Our shows currently are identified by where they are located,” Miss Dolly said in a press statement. “Some examples are Smoky Mountain Adventures or Dixie Stampede. We also recognize that attitudes change and feel that by streamlining the names of our shows, it will remove any confusion or concerns about our shows and will help our efforts to expand into new cities.”

Last year, Slate sent a Yankee reporter to Pigeon Force to write a scathing review of the Dixie Stampede – described as the “Lost Cause of the Confederacy meets Cirque du Soleil.”

The writer went on to call the show a “lily-white extravaganza” that celebrates the “Old South.”

Again, Miss Dolly did not say what influenced the decision to culturally cleanse the Dixie Stampede — but others share my thoughts.

“Well, like everybody else, I love Dolly, and I love all that she’s done for our community, which is her community, and I’m disappointed that they’re yielding to political correctness,” Knox County Mayor Tim Burchett told the Knoxville News Sentinel. “What’s next? Are we going to change the name of Dixie cups and the Dixie sugar company? You know, I just hope they don’t change their Christmas program.”

I reckon somebody ought to give the Dixie Chicks a call…

You’re going to be in heap big trouble with the Southrons around here, kimosabe. They don’t cotton to pesky facts that don’t make Yankees look like the devil incarnate.

I am aware of the history of East Tennessee. I am entitled to my opinion as you are entitled to yours. As you are aware, those of us who had Confederate ancestors are seeing their honor and their memory and even their grave sites dishonored on a daily basis, by those who have no honor. It is only a matter of time, before they come for your idols.

Sure. They use you and folks like you as an example of what “right thinking” whites believe. You may not do it intentionally, but you assist them in their mission to destroy the last remaining vestiges of Southern culture when you use words like “traitor.”

Another self inflicted victim of "P. C.":

THE CONFEDERATE AIR FORCE FLIES AT LAST by Dan Jenkins, 1963.

Confederate Air Force adopts another name, Amarillo Globe, 2001.

"CAF officials said the old name and its "confederate" stereotype inhibited the group's ability to raise funds from image-conscious corporations."

You’re right.

Too bad Dolly has sold out to the PC crowd. Dolly Pardon has gone full blown Hollywood. Her audience no doubt consists of Southern country music lovers and Northerners who want to experience a “Southern venue”

Her theme park has as much to do with authentic Country Music and culture as Disney world has to authentic Medieval fairy tales.

Dollywood will be a shell of it’s former self and collapse as tourist attraction. Probably before her mortal demise.

There is nothing original about Dolly Pardon anymore than her shame marriage.

Much as the real Dolly Pardon exists as a silicone, face lifted(among other parts)botoxed Frankenstein horror spackled with
pancaked make-up clown creation of the pharmaceutical and plastic surgery industry.

“Lost Cause of the Confederacy meets Cirque du Soleil.”

Sounds like fun. Too bad I never got to see it.

I’m a Lincoln lover and never once thought of men Like Robert E Lee or Stonewall Jackson to be traitors. Jefferson Davis, yeah, guilty there. Now it’s all just history. I never hear anybody talk negatively about the South where I live in Illinois.

I’ve read Shelby Foote’s 9 volume saga about the CW twice. I think anyone who reads up on the civil war would likely respect both sides, especially now that over 150 years has passed.

And there’s the difference. Folks can have varying opinions on Lincoln and of course being from Illinois, that makes sense. Just check out some of the WBS threads and you’ll see what I’m talking about.

Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge, Knoxville and East Tennessee were generally pto-Union during the Civil War. The word Dixie should not be associated with anything concerning East Tennessee.

“Everything Lincoln did that “constitutionalists” bellyache about was done by Jefferson Davis first He is forgiven for his centralizing tyranny and his experiments in state socialism (which the Union didn’t engage in).”

Meh, Jefferson Davis wasn’t President of the United States. I really don’t care if he violated whatever constitutional principles the confederacy had. I do, however care that Lincoln violated the constitutional principle of our country, setting a precedent for all the others that followed him.

Of course it was political correctness. We live in E TN, about an hour from Dollywood. People here are vowing never to go again if “Dixie” is removed from the name. I expect that’s a general opinion of most of the south. People here are proud of the word.

Thank you. Now tell me where I’m wrong? At every one of these meetings and rallies, they trot out their token white person who talks about “traitors” and “evil people.” Does that include Gen. Corcoran and the Southern Irish Brigade? It’s easy to heap scorn on 19th century society through 21st century eyes.

On June 8 1861, East Tennessee voted 32,923 to 14,780 to remain in the Union. East Tennesseeans need to quit being ignorant about their history and start to embrace and honor their pro-Northern heritage.
