A fire damaged a 129-year-old Episcopalian church Saturday morning in Pasadena and statues outside the building were defaced, prompting an arson investigation.

...House of Worship Task Force also was summoned to investigate, according to Bastman.

“At this time investigators are not calling this a hate crime, but referring to it as arson, graffiti, vandalism and a burglary,” said Lisa Derderian of the Pasadena Fire Department.

The building, which was built in 1889, is the oldest church along the Arroyo Seco waterway, according to the church’s website.

Well, it wasn’t a mosque, and no bacon was involved so it would be racist to assume it was a hate crime.

It can’t be a hate crime. No one in California is a hater...

"At this time investigators are not calling this a hate crime . . . "

In 2009, a fairly typical year, government crime statistics reported the following incidents at churches:

Vandalism - 7,209
Arson - 119
Intimidation - 496
Simple assault - 1042
Aggravated assault - 204

If these 9,000+ incidents, fewer than 200 were classified as hate crimes, less than one in forty.

Are churches still legal in Jerry Brown’s Kalifornia?

They are “strongly encouraged” to be as social clubs.

It angers me that this church would be attacked like this.

I don't understand this on a number of levels.

1. if for no other reason this is a pristine 129 year old building
2. it is someone else place of worship
3. it's members likely do good things for members of the community
4. this person(s) tried to destroy something that hundreds if not thousands of people appreciate very much

This is not my church, and not my religion, but I stand with the parishioners there in solidarity against this.

One of those Pasadena Episcopal churches has a life-size statue of General George Patton in one of the courtyards. He was a religious man and the Patton family were long time members there and apparently were generous givers. They built the courtyard and placed the statue in full military regalia there. I don’t know which church it is, only that it is in Pasadena.

Is it even appropriate to refer to an Episcopalian edifice as a church? Church suggests that something religious takes place there.

Don’t judge all churches, regardless of their denomination, by the national leadership, most which have taken a leftward swing in the past generation. Away from the cities, the centers of liberalism, the churches, mostly the lay people, in red America for the most part quietly continue following the Jesus of their forefathers. They don’t leave because they built the churches around the corner from where they live.

No, anyone continuing to support the ECUSA, or PCUSA, or UCC at this point is part of the solution, not an innocent bystander.

If we are going to hold all Nazis responsible for the Holocaust, we need to be willing to hold all supporters of the apostatizing churches responsible for their actions.

dear ben,

re: “Atheist, eh?”

Are you asking me, or defining the arsonist?

(no, I am not an ‘atheist’, but with the current state of affairs in the state where i was born, there exists no love for it.)
