A House committee on Wednesday advanced a bill that would rename Gravelly Point Park after former first lady Nancy Reagan, roiling local residents who are still upset about the renaming of Washington National Airport for Ronald Reagan 20 years ago.
The bill passed the House Natural Resources Committee along party lines over the objections of Rep. Don Beyer (D-Va.), who accused Republicans of forcing the name change despite a complete lack of local support or input.
I have great respect for Nancy Reagan . . . , Beyer said. But this bill is the equivalent of someone coming in and changing the furniture in your house without asking you. First, you would have liked them to ask you, and even if you do like the furniture, you probably would have wanted input since its your house.
Grover Norquist, the conservative anti-tax crusader behind the proposed change as well as the airport name change two decades ago, called Beyers opposition partisan and tacky.
John Dorrance, 28, practices paragliding on the ground at Gravelly Point in Arlington, Va., on Feb. 8, 2016. (Linda Davidson/The Washington Post) Despite more than 120 landmarks, schools, roads, boulevards, post offices and one nuclear-powered aircraft carrier named after Reagan, there is always room for more, according to Norquist.
Wednesdays debate revived the heated 1989 fight over renaming the airport, which remains fresh enough in the minds of many local Democrats that they insist on calling it by its original moniker, National Airport.

I hate it when we rename things
I knew she was older but
I didn’t realize she was part of the Confederacy?
oh I think we both know it’s not just confederates they’re against.
The local residents really should have SOME say ... so let’s give them the choice between naming it after Nancy Reagan or Melania Trump.
The Governor Malcolm WilsonTappan Zee Bridge, commonly known as the “Tappan Zee Bridge”, since it was built in ‘52.
The $5 Bil Replacement bridge is now “Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge “, named after Saint Mario the ConMan, not the marvelous Video Game Hero.
How cool it would have been to be the RWR Bridge.
Petty politics, plain and simple.
Let’s rename Ft. Marcy Park after Hillary.
Do you think they’s object?.................
Maybe because Lady Baird had as her special project the beautification of public places
How about "Joint Park Clinton-Foster".
I’ve long thought the better move back then would have been to rename Dulles for Reagan and leave Washington National alone.
We loved going to Gravelley Point to watch the planes land when we lived in the area. I’ll never forget the look on my husband’s face when I took him there for the first time.
Stop naming ships after left-wing military haters, first.
I don’t need to give examples, do I?
Ships shouldn’t be named after people in the first place. Name them after places or battles.
You are willing to tear down every visible vestige of the confederacy-—but you cannot name one little park after Nancy Reagan???
It would make even more sense for LAX, but whatever.
If I recall correctly, nobody gave me a choice when just about every main drag in the country was re-named Martin Luther King Boulevard.
And promptly became a $#!+hole.
Ah yes.........JUST SAY NO!
YUP; a sh!thole overflowing with drugs, murder, pimps, and whores.
