Secret mobile phone surveillance by German authorities on the rise: report

German security authorities are increasingly using mobile phones to secretly locate suspects, according to a media report published on Tuesday.

More and more, in order to determine the location of suspects, the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV) and the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) are using mobile phones to send out hidden text messages, according to a report in Handelsblatt.

In the second half of 2017 alone, the BfV sent out around 180,000 such messages. In the same period the previous year, the BfV did this about 144,000 times.

By using this technique, security authorities can find out exactly where mobile phones are and create profiles of a suspect’s movements. Though the phone can confirm receipt of the message, the messages go undetected in that they are not displayed on the receiver’s screen.

The BKA is also making greater use of this surveillance method. In the last six months of 2017, the federal police sent out almost 22,000 such messages — more than four times as many as in the same period in 2016. …

She is a product of East Germany and based on her early life experience with the all pervasive stasi and her studied rise to political power based on going along with the system, she imo would not innately be opposed to state surveillance of citizens provided it was being done by agencies which she controlled for reasons that would benefit her power

Just an adjunct means of controlling social media to root out those who might threaten stability - ie, state policy

I know a guy who works in electronics and he told me he was making "cell phone interception" for other countries.

She learned from the Gestapo and the Stasi. I don’t think the Third Reich could have done a better job.
