NY: Parma Man Accidentally Shot from Half Mile Away
Ammoland ^ | 25 January, 2018 | Dean Weingarten

In October 2016, two men were target shooting in rural New York.  They were sighting in rifles for the upcoming deer season.

They could see about a thousand feet, but there was no obvious backstop on the flat ground.  They had two .308 Winchester rifles, a Del-Ton AR, and a pistol. It was about 4 p.m.

Almost half a mile away, unseen, Kevin Flannery was mowing a lane on his property.  A picture taken a year later shows tall ground cover on either side of the lane. Flannery could not be seen from the position of the shooters.

Flannery apparently moved in and out of the “beaten zone” of the rifle shooters as they zeroed in their rifles. The bullets traversed tall grass and weeds before reaching the lane Flannery was mowing.

Flannery's mower, then Flannery were hit. Flannery was critically wounded. It took months for him to recovery after being hit with a high powered rifle round. He lost 40 pounds while recovering from surgery in the hospital.

From rochesterfirst.com:

PARMA, N.Y. (WROC-TV) – Police have arrested two suspects in relation to a shooting in Parma that happened on Tuesday.

Police responded around 4:45 p.m. to Moul Road for a report of a man who was shot in the abdomen while working on his property.

Police say as they responded, they could hear shots being fired in the distance. Deputies located the shooters, Ryan G. Pellman, 34, of Greece and Matthew E. Rodgers, 35, of Hilton in an area behind and to the west of North Avenue.

Pellman and Rodgers were allegedly shooting paper targets without the use of a backdrop.

No backstop. The land was flat. They hit an innocent man they could not see, nearly half a mile away.

A .308 on flat land? Not a good idea.

There is a reason why the DEC doesn’t allow hunting with rifles in eh “Southern Zone”. Only shotguns with slugs....this is why.

In PA, we were always weary of NY city hunters doing sound shooting; hear a sound and shoot at it.

NRA rules. Know what your target is, what is between you and your target, what is beyond the target out to the range of your load. At deer camp a few years ago I was bow hunting and discovered the ‘hidden’ stands of a husband and wife team were only 150 yes apart and their shooting lanes were pointed at each other.

They used different trails to get to their secret stands and in the early gun season they could not see each other. I took them pictures with the foliage gone and needless to say it was eye opening.

Enjoy our gun freedoms safely, always.

If you can’t see the horizon, don’t take the shot.

Firing a gun is just like tweeting. Once you mash the button, the projectile ain’t coming back.

It looks like local prosecutors tried, but failed on a technicality. It’s exactly this kind of thing that gets the left slavering angry.

First rule of shooting at targets - ensure that there is a solid, 100 percent reliable backstop. Like a hillside, dirt pile, concrete wall, etc.

There are morons shooting sniper rifles in the game area near us. Land is mostly flat, few rises here and there. Wonder how far those bullets go...

As I type this my New Jersey transplant neighbors are shooting on their property.
They have a nice home range that has a natural hill and on that they added an earthen backstop. Very safe, you have to be trying hard to get a round to go past the range.

Sounds like a lively skirmish going on.

Some of my dope, probably dope head, neighbors got new AR-15s or something like that for Christmas. It has been too cold for the takers around here to get out much until this last week.

I heard one blazing away at about 0700 and another after school. I doubt any of them have a backstop.

Idiots with guns give all of us a hard time.

Every bullet you fire has a lawyer hooked to it. No backstop is just asking for the lawyer to be used.
