“Beetle Bailey” comic strip artist Mort Walker died Saturday at age 94, his family said.

According to his oldest son, Greg, who partnered with his father on that venerable cartoon take on the military life, the elder Walker died of old age at his home in Stanford, Conn.

Walker was part of more than a half-dozen comic strips in his career, including "Hi and Lois," ''Boner's Ark" and "Sam & Silo." But his greatest success came from Beetle, his hot-tempered sergeant and the rest of the gang at fictional Camp Swampy, which he drew for nearly 70 years.

After an initial lack of popularity, the cartoon eventually succeeded, which Walker attributed to Beetle’s indolence and reluctance to follow authority.

My favorite part of Beetle Bailey was when Sarge would beat the crap out of him all the time. When I was a kid, I thought it was so funny how Beetle ended up all in a heap with his arms and legs poking out all different directions with smoke coming off him.

Comics were good back then.

I didn't know he did Hi and Lois.

I'm 70, and I grew up on those comics, or as we said, The Funnies (Boston)

The Boston Herald-American had the best comics section in the whole country. I used to buy the Sunday edition JUST for the comics. TWO full sections, a broadsheet and a tabloid. Where else would I get to read “Cicero’s Cat”?

We used to say the Funnies down in New York, but maybe we got it from Boston.

I did recognize the style of his in Hi and Lois. Used to read it.

Funnies in Maine too as I remember. Every Sunday AM before getting ready for breakfast and church we’d all read the funnies together.

I'm 70 y/o and still read the comics every day. Peanuts rules, but Beetle Bailey is a very close second.
RIP Mort Walker, you made daily life a little easier to deal with.

R.I.P.

There was one particular Beetle Bailey panel which I wish I had a copy of. Sorry I didn’t commit that panel’s text bubble to memory. First, Sarge says something “Who sent this?”

Next, Plato is standing at attention, and being called on to explain why he wrote “Styxian darkness unrelieved by . . . blah, blah, blah . . . “ (and here I wish I could recite the whole litany). Plato explains,

“I thought it sounded better than, ‘No Report.’"

Yeah, I always enjoyed that, too. Later on, I used to get annoyed when the strip would go for days focusing on Sarge's lookalike dog, Otto. That always seemed like Mort was "phoning it in".

Yea. You had suffer through those types to get to the good ones when Beetle was being a smart ass, pissing off Sarge, and takin's his ass whoopins. Man. It must be hard to think of a funny comic every SINGLE day for so many years. I might even run out of material after that long.

Nah.

Just save me from Daily Circus.

:)
