After wave of Democratic victories, a loss of political clout for Northern Va.

RICHMOND — The blue wave that leveled the balance of power in the General Assembly last fall was driven largely by voters in rapidly growing Northern Virginia, who swapped veteran Republicans for Democrats in counties such as Fairfax and Prince William.

But it also wiped out much of the region’s seniority in the legislature, a key reason that many of the bills sponsored by Northern Virginia lawmakers — including several that aim to address specific problems in the D.C. suburbs — have failed to survive even a committee hearing.

Down went a bill prohibiting cars from using bike lanes to pass another car on the right, an issue that resonates in traffic-choked communities in the region that are trying to become more bike-friendly.

A bill to suspend rush-hour tolls on Interstate 66 for carpoolers during the state’s road-widening project inside the Beltway also quickly died. So did another that would have prohibited mapping software companies from suggesting local neighborhood streets as faster routes during rush hour....

Del. Lee Carter (D-Manassas) looked deflated inside the state legislature’s Pocahontas Building one recent afternoon after six of his bills had failed, including one that sought to punish drivers in Northern Virginia as much as $500 for not yielding to pedestrians crossing highways...

The only reason he pushed that bill, is because ILLEGALS won't use the cross walks ...

Darwin award when illegals cross elevated highways on foot because they have no car and want to walk to a grocer or apartment on the other side. Without walking up the feeder to cross at a light underneath said highway.

Make no mistake about it, there are a number of fairly well organized bicycle activists who see getting you out of your car and onto a bike as a mission in life, and will use government at every opportunity to force you into doing this. They think they can turn U.S. suburbs into Amsterdam.

Actually this is because there is a very popular trail in Nova that crosses a highway where drivers rarely yield to people despite huge signs telling them too. several people have been killed there, crossing because they have the right of way.

“there is a very popular trail in Nova that crosses a highway”

Must be an intelligence test set up by space aliens.

What earthling would route a trail across a highway?

I ride bikes and enjoy it. I try to ride where there are few or no cars. You may be right and have a right of way, but you can also be dead right!

Spot on!!!!

Like thinking you are vindicated for speeding up and running over a pedestrian because he isn’t in a cross walk.

When ‘jaywalking’ involved, I tend to not stop for them BUT will not bump into nor run over them,..for me to get one, they will have to step in front of me and I may or may not hit them..BUT not intentionally... AND YES, I do stop when a pedestrian in the MARKED crosswalk.

"Down went a bill prohibiting cars from using bike lanes to pass another car on the right, an issue that resonates in traffic-choked communities in the region that are trying to become more bike-friendly."

For safety sakes get the bicycles off the roads. Make broader sidewalks to accommodate bicycles and pedestrians and make cyclists obey traffic laws with the same fines as motorists.

I cannot bring myself to have even the smallest amount of sympathy for these Democrat jaywalkers and hippy-cyclists. None.

sometimes I can’t believe what I am reading, what the complaint is.

In this case, the liberal Post should be happy with major Democrat victories in Northern Virginia, and sending more Democrats to the legislature in Richmond.

But instead, they are bitching about the loss of seniority of Northern Virginians in the legislature, as Republicans were defeated by the Democrats they prefer.

Sometimes I can’t believe what I’m reading and hearing from the liberal side, and this is one such time.

The OD Trail used to be a train track, leading to DC - They tore out the tracks and put asphalt down for a bike trail. But it's well marked to slow down when approaching by car ...

Virginia is now deep blue because of the huge numbers of illegal aliens in Northern Virginia.
And they vote in large numbers - straight Democrat.

There is an even larger component of non-citizen legal immigrants who vote in even larger numbers - from India, China, and the Middle East.

The democrats and groups like the SEIU register them by the thousands. They just check off the “US Citizen” box and they are home free. The only check is at the polls where they use a drivers license. The major jurisdictions - Fairfax, Alexandria, Arlington - are all sanctuaries where the democrats run everything, and they are totally corrupt. Immigrant crime is soaring, but the police in these jurisdictions hide the numbers and make sure you don’t know the immigrant background of the criminals. The Fairfax sheriff - another liberal democrat woman - won’t even turn alien criminals over to ICE.

The Republicans could have stopped this, but all the establishment Republicans, mostly in Northern Virginia, didn’t lift a finger, because the donors and the Chamber of Commerce wanted the cheap labor for their yards and building trades, and the cheap Indian and Chinese labor for the IT conglomerates headquarter there.

Virginia is now the east coast version of California. It will be democrat for the rest of your lifetime.

Where the W&OD bike trail crosses roads, they usually have four-way stop signs for both the cars and bikes.
But the arrogant bikers never bother to stop, and they are usually travelling at high speed.

On roads where the bike paths give out and it becomes a narrow road, they deliberately block the lane and all the traffic behind them. They know the word is out from the liberal mayors and councils that the cops will not do anything to the cherished bikers.

“The OD Trail used to be a train track, leading to DC - They tore out the tracks and put asphalt down for a bike trail.”

So the answer to my question, “What earthling would route a trail across a highway?” is “bicycle idiots would do that.”

“But it’s well marked to slow down when approaching by car ...”

I would never have the tiniest inkling of the faintest suspicion that there could ever be the slightest chance of that working out well. Unless by “well” one means “removing bicycle idiots from the gene pool.”

I have driven through stretches in No. Va. with large illegal populations and have had to hit the brakes 6 times in 10 blocks for people crossing in the middle of the block. Plenty of crosswalks and plenty of stoplights, but they are TOO LAZY to walk another 20 feet and cross at the corner. Plus they are too stupid to realize that drivers can’t easily see them when they are dressed in dark clothing at night.

The cops have put up those temporary flashing signs warning drivers to be alert for pedestrians crossing in the middle of the block.

Side note: The foreign drivers in these neighborhoods either are unlicensed, have no knowledge of traffic laws, don’t care, or all of the above. They will drive onto sidewalks or over curbs/medians or pretty much anywhere their car will fit. If they can see a path to where they want to go, they will take it, regardless of whether there is a road or they have to break laws. The cops do nothing.

They will stop ANYWHERE (like a turn lane) to do whatever it is they feel the need to do (text, look at a map, make a call because they are lost). The cops do nothing.

Maybe the trail was there before somebody routed a highway across it?

Could be. Of course, continuing to use a trail that had a highway built across it is pretty much as dumb as routing a trail across a highway, and for the same reasons.
