Democrats snag Republican Missouri House seat, lose 2 other contests in special election

JEFFERSON CITY • Democrats made a dent in the GOP's super-majority in the Missouri House on Tuesday, swiping a Jefferson County-based district that had been held by a Republican.

Democrat Mike Revis snagged nearly 52 percent of the vote compared to Republican David Linton's 48 percent share, according to preliminary results from the Missouri Secretary of State.

According to the unofficial results, Republicans still took at least two out of four special election contests on Tuesday, winning decisively in two western Missouri districts.

In the 144th district, encompassing a patch of southeast Missouri, including Iron County and parts of Washington County, Democrat Jim Scaggs led Republican Chris Dinkins narrowly at 9:20 p.m. with 14 precincts left to report tallies.

The Democrats were elated by their flash of success, saying the victory in Jefferson County signaled more problems for the Republican brand going into the November elections.

A loss here and a loss there soon adds up. It seems every week, we are losing a race here and there. Frustrating. Even more so is that nobody cares and just laughs it off.

Luckily we did win 2 out of 4 elections. All 4 were GOP held, now 1 is DNC, 2 are GOP and 1 is DNC leading.

Yeah true. I have to say I am stunned to see many here who thinks we will gain seats in the HOUSE in November.....not sure what they are seeing. The Senate even with our advantage will probably be a wash. I wish I were wrong.

I really believe our side is underestimating the energy and enthusiasm of the DemoncRAT base and how much Trump hate is really out there.

2018 is going to be very tough. The Rats are going to be voting in huge numbers. A slight drop in Republican voters will lead to massive wave for the RATS.

all depends on what happens next 5 or 6 months with fisa, U1 plus other issues and economy... these special elections with nothing else on ballot just doesn’t drive turn out especially state elections which are less ideological..

I don’t think anyone is underestimating the absolute hate and desire to get rid of POTUS from the loons on the left who can come out in force in special local elections and make a difference.

Totally agree. Democrats have the momentum. They are getting out of bed and to the polls. Republican are sleeping in and doing nothing. I am still not seeing concern among conservatives or regular Republican about what is being done before their very eyes. I guess the ostrich scenario works for them. Head in the sand is their motto.

And today the Pennsylvania GOP lost their bid to protect their gerrymandered districts. The PA State Legislature could look very different next year.

With this Senate does it really matter who is in control? I mean truly?

Remember, Liberals believe government is the “be all end all” of existence, whereas conservatives see government as a ‘necessary evil’. Liberals are always going to be more motivated than conservatives when it comes to running for offices. Most conservatives want nothing to do with government and would rather work in the private sector, so we cede the ground to the liberals.

Judges, judges, judges. That is all I care about. If the Senate quit EVERYTHING but appointing judges, I’d be thrilled. Wouldn’t cost the country a penny either.

It mattered for the Gorsuch confirmation. The rumors are that there could be more vacancies. Sotomayor is ill, Kennedy seems to want out, and Ruth Buzzi Ginsberg was in knickers when Moses brought the Ten Commandments down from Mount Sinai.

So it does matter.

Well that is dumb of us. And Republicans have done great in 2010, 2014, 2016 so I think their is interest in elections but right now, nothing is getting done in Congress and they will pay the price. I guess Trump can just VETO in 2019 and 2020. The Republicans are HORRIBLE in leadership.

The GOP won the other 3. In the Jefferson seat it was 108 votes and very, very low turnout.
