Leaning tower of Taiwan.
Are they stupid...a controlled explosion would solve the problem.
To: TigerLikesRooster
What the heck do you do with THAT?
To: Sacajaweau
Yes, and that would solve the pesky problem of survivors.
To: TigerLikesRooster
That could ruin anyone’s day....

Are they stupid...a controlled explosion would solve the problem.Well maybe-
...local fire service said 147 of the 213 residents from the building remained unaccounted for...
has something to do with it.

.a controlled explosion would solve the problem.
You'd have to go inside with a crew to set all the strategic explosives and that takes a lot of time. Don't think I'd want that job.........
FWIW, when they took down the Hudson building in Detroit, it took a 12 man crew 24 days to set all the explosives.......
I think at this point, the safest course of action would be to clear the area around it and let it fall.........

Oh no!
I spent a hunk of time in Hualien when I was part in a cross-cultural nursing group and staying at nearby Tsu Chi University. Toroko Gorge is not far from there. I fell in love with the place, the aboriginal music, and the people there.
I am lifting up my prayers for the people in Hualien and Taiwan.

After several big earthquakes, the mainland cracked down on building codes. China may now be safer than Taiwan in an earthquake.
In Taiwan, they often use plastic bottles and filler in the concrete which leaves air pockets in the walls and weakens them.

It would be worse than that. If you click the link and read the article further, near the end it says:
One female resident watching rescue operations, who declined to give her name, wondered out loud whether recent construction work might have weakened the building.
Some residents, she said, had bought neighbouring flats inside the building and knocked down walls to create bigger dwellings. A restaurant on the first floor had recently been turned into an open plan eatery, she added.

I fell in love with the place, the aboriginal music, and the people there. I live outside of Taipei and my apartment rumbled a bit and moved side to side. The day before this one, there was a 6.1. Since this one there have been about 40 aftershocks ranging from 3 to 4. Just had one a few minutes ago.
