Sacramento Bee Leaks 19.5 Million California Voter Records, Promptly Compromised by Hackers

Last month, a local California newspaper left more than 19 million voter records exposed online. Gizmodo confirmed this week that the records were compromised during an apparent ransomware attack.

The Sacramento Bee said in a statement that a firewall protecting its database was not restored during routine maintenance last month, leaving the 19,501,258 voter files publicly accessible. Additionally, the names, home addresses, email addresses, and phone numbers of 52,873 Sacramento Bee subscribers were compromised.

“We take this incident seriously and have begun efforts to notify each of the individuals on the contact list and to provide them resources to help guard against potential misuse of their personal contact information,” the paper said in a statement. “We are also working with the Secretary of State’s office to share with them the details of this intrusion.”

The Kromtech Security Center first discovered the data on January 31st and reviewed records from several of the exposed databases before determining who owned the data. Kromtech reached out immediately to multiple employees in the Bee’s IT department but received no response.

Gizmodo was notified about the breach on February 2nd and reached out to an executive editor at the Bee. Our email was not returned. After emailing two other members of the Bee’s editorial board on Monday—including Gary Wortel, the paper’s president and publisher—Gizmodo was contacted by a public relations director at The McClatchy Company, the Bee’s owner.

A McClatchy spokesperson said the executive editor first contacted by Gizmodo had left the paper day our email was sent.

McClatchy provided an initial statement on Tuesday, saying it had “strict protocols in place to ensure the security of our data” and that it was “aware of a ransomware attack on one of our servers that was located outside our core IT structure.” The spokesperson added: “We know that in databases apparently targeted, no personally identifiable information, as defined by the State of California, was involved.”

Below is a sample of a leaked voter record, with personal information redacted. It contains the voter’s name, phone number, address, gender, date of birth, political affiliation, among other election-related details.

Ah yes, the Leftist’s, “We’re really sorry. You can count on it!”, defense.

Their articles are as bad as their security.

What the hell are they good for anyway.

The state is so seriously f’d up we call the capital Excremento, and they’re still singing the praises of last century’s worn out collectivist bull stuff!

Not only did those nations fail, they failed after tens of millions died in each of them, with a total close to 20 million dead last century.

Most of them were pretty straight forward with their collectivist ways, but NAZI Germany was a Socialist System, and forever the Leftists even try to hang that around Capitalist’s necks.

No a fricken clue out of that bunch...

Why would a newspaper need that information anyway?

Couldn’t the SofS Office merely summarize the totals by county/city, party and age groups?

When I moved to San Francisco I filled out a voter registration 3 times, as a Republican I never got my voter card, 3rd time was a charm, they sent me a card after I marked the registration as a Democrat.

That has happened several times already across the US. The newspaper obtains the records, puts them on a very convenient database with an easy search feature, and pretends that they're innocently providing public information. When I was living in Indiana, I believe that it was the Ft Wayne newspaper that did so. I personally looked up several very Liberal friends who apparently didn't practice what they preached, LOL.

CT has done it... https://cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/12/26/a-newspaper-publishes-names-of-gun-permit-holders-sparking-outrage/

My FR Thread on the Indiana event is apparently erased from the history books... http://www.FreeRepublic.com/forum/a3b5cf42e5833.htm

More deliberate voter intimidation by the left... “If you’re a Republican, we’re going to slip your racist name and address to BLM for a subsequent burglary, maybe even a nice little home invasion robbery and nice little rape and murder or two. BLM will be hunting your racist behind for the next 50 years. Count on it, hahahaha.”

They were compromised, right?

They will be recovered without the fraudulent registrations in the data base. Then they will say they were innocent and up-front all along.

For about $35 you can get the list on CD. The registrar will give it to you. Something not right with this story.

What the hell was a newspaper doing with sensitive voter information?!

It is not sensitive voter information. Anyone can get it simply for the asking. Candidates use it all the time. You pay and they give it to you on a disc, sorted any way that you would like to have it sorted.

This is a nothing story.

“Maybe we can find out how many non-citizens voted in California”

The answer is simple....All of them!

When Ca. issued Driver’s licenses to illegals they were originally marked identifying them as such. Ca. has since removed the identifying marks and as illegal’s D.L. looks like any other. Match that with “Motor Voter” voter registration and you have millions of illegals voting.

There is huge voter fraud in Ca. Promoted by the Democrats it is no wonder it is a one party state.

Why does a newspaper have access to voter rolls?

That definitely happens. Here in Sacramento it has been tested at community events and county and state fairs where there are both Democrat and Republican voter registration booths. Supposedly, you can register as a Dem at the Rep booth and as a Rep at the Dem booth and they are supposed to turn in all registration forms. If you are a Rep who submits a registration form at the Dem booth you can come sort through the trash after the event and find your form ripped up and landfill-bound. At the Republican booth we always would encourage any Dem registrants to go turn in the form at the Dem booth to avoid any accusations of doing the same thing. The Dem booth would not reciprocate that action.

Massive lawsuit time at minimum to bankrupt them.

Also criminal charges too for all those involved. Meaning felony, prison time and shut down the paper permanently.

How you like that Sac Bee???

If that happens, then I can hear the cockroaches screaming.
