Sometimes a source is just too good to be true.

Boston Herald columnist Ron Borges landed what he thought was a major scoop Thursday night: Tom Brady’s agent texted him to say the Patriots quarterback wanted a new contract in light of former backup Jimmy Garoppolo’s megadeal with the 49ers,and the five-time Super Bowl champion was willing to sit out offseason team activities until he got it.

Borges wrote a story, which the Herald published. Apparently the source was not Brady’s agent, but a random fan pretending to be Don Yee,

What a maroon. For a story this big, you don't trust text messages. You pick up a phone and call the agent. Or the player. Or the Patriots. You don't assume a random text is true. This is Journalism 101.

This is symptomatic of the media's frenzy to be first, instead of being accurate.

If Brady wasn’t the biggest star on the Patriots, his threat would poison the waters between him and management. As it is it might roil the waters.

He wasn't stupid, and this wasn't a "frenzy."

The story I heard was that he claimed to have independent corroboration about the legitimacy of the source.

Ron Borges columns have regularly been critical of the Patriots organization. He wanted to be in first with the hit.

Borges had some phone conversations with “Tom Brady’s agent”. The agent lives in California. The prankster’s number has area code 617.

Boston.

The paper, Boston Herald is more conservative that the Boston Globe, ha...but is printed by the Globe under long term agreement. It declared bankruptcy and three suitors are vying for it, auction to be held Tue. (Home of the great Howie Carr)

Borges left the Globe after plagiarism etc and wound up at the Herald.

I have always liked Howie Carr. Talk about fighting a tough uphill battle.

He may have had voice conversations with the “agent” but supposedly they texted each other via phone...

Being first, instead of being accurate.

1988: Media satirists Negativland cancel tour after realizing it would lose money. One member contacts media to say that one of their songs may have inspired a Minn. teen to kill his family (that part was true; David Brom). Media like KPIX in SF pounced on the story, and the band said “federal authorities told us to cancel the tour” and stay home. “Murder and music...KILLER SONG”—and media too lazy to check out stories further.

What happened to any kind of verification? I like the Ben Bradlee rule, three sources of confirmation. I don’t any news outlet today has any journalistic standards, they don’t even know the basics.

He could have called the Patriots or Tom Brady.

If he had corroboration, then why did the Globe suspend him?

He didn't have corroboration. He lied about it.

Here's a storyline from the HBO series "The Wire" that plays out the same way ...

The general story here is that the Baltimore PD guy had fabricated the story of a serial killer as a way to generate overtime, and the reporter decided to run with the story -- not knowing that it was a hoax -- by making his own phone calls from the "culprit." LOL.

Listening to the great Howie Carr right now. Howie is indeed priceless and has gotten better every year on the radio since joining with Jerry Williams.

Borges has a lot of talent but karma has bitten him because he has always been a miserable prick.

“This is Journalism 101”

What passes for Journalism today is spellcheck and social media.
