The Houston school district is under fire after a student without legal status ended up in immigration detention following his arrest by a school police officer for an altercation with a female student.
A lawyer for Dennis Rivera Sarmiento, 19, said his client was bullied by the 15-year-old girl and retaliated only after she taunted him with racial slurs, threw a full bottle of Gatorade at him and confronted him.
"He's very fearful of being deported to Honduras," said Rivera's attorney, Brandon Roché.
On Wednesday, students at Stephen F. Austin High School in Houston staged a lunch hour walkout to protest Rivera's detention and the school's action, chanting "Free Dennis."
The case has drawn the attention of actress Alyssa Milano who tweeted that she signed a United We Dream petition calling for Rivera's release.

His “retaliation only after being taunted” was to punch out a 15 year old girl. The “students” protesting should read “ Latino students”. The picture of the protesters with the banner reading “black latino unity” doesn’t seem to include any black students.
And maybe ICE should troll these protests and pick up a few more. Put some fear into these illegal aliens that their days are numbered, go into hiding, pack, and go home to Mexico.

Afraid of being deported back to Honduras? I have vacationed in Honduras. It’s a tropical paradise! Lovely beaches, a really good reef system for diving, great food, friendly people, low cost of living...
Oh, maybe that is just the resort area, which we were warned not to leave, nor should we move around at night...
Maybe Honduras IS a shithole, but it’s his shithole and he should start the movement (no pun intended)to clean it up. rather than come here and violate our laws. I was very careful to enter Honduras in a very legal manner...maybe he should have done likewise when he came here....
