Florida Teacher of the Year's gun violence post goes viral after school shooting

Raley said she’ll “take all the criticism and attacks” for her opinion because, as a teacher with two decades of experience, she has to worry about an active-shooter situation on a daily basis.

The middle school teacher said over her almost two decades as an educator that she’s seen an increase in violence and a lack of compassion among students.

“Until we, as a country, are willing to get serious and talk about mental health issues, lack of available care for the mental health issues, lack of discipline in the home, horrendous lack of parental support when the schools are trying to control horrible behavior at school (oh no! Not MY KID. What did YOU do to cause my kid to react that way?), lack of moral values, and yes, I’ll say it – violent video games that take away all sensitivity to ANY compassion for others’ lives – as well as reality TV that makes it commonplace for people to constantly scream up in each others’ faces and not value any other person but themselves, we will have a gun problem in school,” the sixth-grade language arts teacher wrote.

Raley, who loves hunting and four-wheeling in her spare time, added that she grew up with guns in her home.

“But you know what? My parents NEVER supported any bad behavior from me,” Raley said.

She said when she began teaching 20 years ago, she never had to worry about calling a student’s parents and getting cussed out, told to go to hell, or threatened with a public shaming all because she was calling out their child’s behavior. Something, she said, has got to change.

She doubles down that she had guns in her home.

Okay, I’ll be the bad guy and say what no one else is brave enough to say, but wants to say. I’ll take all the criticism and attacks from everyone because you know what? I’m a TEACHER. I live this life daily. And I wouldn’t do anything else! But I also know daily I could end up in an active shooter situation.

Until we, as a country, are willing to get serious and talk about mental health issues, lack of available care for the mental health issues, lack of discipline in the home, horrendous lack of parental support when the schools are trying to control horrible behavior at school (oh no! Not MY KID. What did YOU do to cause my kid to react that way?), lack of moral values, and yes, I’ll say it-violent video games that take away all sensitivity to ANY compassion for others’ lives, as well as reality TV that makes it commonplace for people to constantly scream up in each others’ faces and not value any other person but themselves, we will have a gun problem in school. Our kids don’t understand the permanency of death anymore!!!

I grew up with guns. Everyone knows that. But you know what? My parents NEVER supported any bad behavior from me. I was terrified of doing something bad at school, as I would have not had a life until I corrected the problem and straightened my ass out. My parents invaded my life. They knew where I was ALL the time. They made me have a curfew. They made me wake them up when I got home. They made me respect their rules. They had full control of their house, and at any time could and would go through every inch of my bedroom, backpack, pockets, anything! Parents: it’s time to STEP UP! Be the parent that actually gives a crap! Be the annoying mom that pries and knows what your kid is doing. STOP being their friend. They have enough “friends” at school. Be their parent. Being the “cool mom” means not a damn thing when either your kid is dead or your kid kills other people because they were allowed to have their space and privacy in YOUR HOME. I’ll say it again. My home was filled with guns growing up. For God’s sake, my daddy was an 82nd Airborne Ranger who lost half his face serving our country. But you know what? I never dreamed of shooting anyone with his guns. I never dreamed of taking one! I was taught respect for human life, compassion, rules, common decency, and most of all, I was taught that until I moved out, my life and bedroom wasn’t mine...it was theirs. And they were going to know what was happening because they loved me and wanted the best for me.

There. Say that I’m a horrible person. I didn’t bring up gun control, and I will refuse to debate it with anyone. This post wasn’t about gun control. This was me, loving the crap out of people and wanting the best for them. This was about my school babies and knowing that God created each one for greatness, and just wanting them to reach their futures. It’s about 20 years ago this year I started my teaching career. Violence was not this bad 20 years ago. Lack of compassion wasn’t this bad 20 years ago. And God knows 20 years ago that I wasn’t afraid daily to call a parent because I KNEW that 9 out of 10 would cuss me out, tell me to go to Hell, call the news on me, call the school board on me, or post all over FaceBook about me because I called to let them know what their child chose to do at school...because they are a NORMAL kid!!!!!

Those 17 lives mattered. When are we going to take our own responsibility seriously?

However, the one thing even ‘woke’ teachers will not advocate is the abolition of public education. It also happens to be the one thing that would make many problems vanish.

Discipline cases, psychos, truants and others unfit to be at a private school will be kicked out. He’s your dog, Charlie Brown.

Private schools will conduct their security operations their way. And God help the next would-be killer.

She’s so right. It’s a sad testament to the level of discourse in our country right now that her comments would even be considered controversial in anyway.

Libs will never touch this because they are complicit in the problems this teacher brought up. It’s easier to blame it on some rifle.

We need more mental health treatment and fewer psychotropic drugs.

Good for her. I hope her job is not in jeopardy.
I hope she inspires other teachers to speak up about the parenting or lack there of.

Get rid of the “free public ndoctrination centers”. Let families decide for themselves which facilities meet their families needs for education and let them pay for it themselves. Sell off the buildings and buses to reduce public debt. Problems solved.

Nailed it! I would also throw away the concept that every child is "special" and Participation Trophies are the way things work in the real world. When I was a kid, if I got spanked in school, I KNEW with absolute certainty I was going to get it again when I got home. Today's Snowflakes need a reality check and must be taught that it's their own effort that determines their success, not the idea that everyone is the same and that we are all "special". It just doesn't work that way and some kids can't accept that fact.

I recall not long after what happened in Sandy Hook that a meme came out (one of my favourite pro gun ones) that had the caption “Semi auto rifles have been available for more than 100 years”, with images of vintage gun ads. Then at the bottom it said “What has changed”, with images of the “Hollywood” sign and screencaps from graphic and violent movies and video games.

I’ve tried finding that meme far and wide since then and have not been able to see it. This article makes me think of it.

Was this the same teacher that had just that morning been awarded a brand new 2018 Toyota (for TOTY)?

Good for her, if so.

I believe the time has come for public schools to design and administer a security plan. If they do not, then close the school and let a charter school have the land.

The plan needs to include:

1. Access limitation, and a patrol to cover the fence where access could be breached.
2. ID checking. I taught for two years at a school and I was given an ID but it was never asked to show it, and I walked into the school from the parking lot via one of 5 entrances (with many more in the rear of the building.)
3. An armed patrol at each point where IDs are checked for entrance to the school. This is meant to include portables where a fence must enclose them as well.
4. Establish a program where the personnel who are armed are regularly trained (monthly at a minimum) and include teachers who wish to volunteer for the training. People in this program will be allowed to concealed carry on campus and will not be identified to the student body— identification to the rest of the staff is contingent on how willing the staff is to keep this information secret.
5. Regular drills need to be established to make emergency calls to the local police and have the police respond quickly.
6. Students need to have a class in personnel safety where they learn how to protect themselves in their facility and how to not be defenseless in the face of a potential shooter.
I have probably left some things out.
