Georgia's largest road construction project is almost done, GDOT says (tolled express lanes)
WSB TV 2 ^ | February 13, 2018 | Steve Gehlbach

COBB COUNTY, Ga. - The largest road construction project in state history is nearing completion, and relief for commuters is almost here.

Georgia's Department of Transportation program manager for the project told Channel 2's Steve Gehlbach even after delays for weather and after the I-85 collapse, the new 75 express lanes should open by the end of summer.

“It’s the longest land bridge in the state of Georgia," program manager for the project, Stephen Lively said.

Northern sections above the 75-575 split and through Marietta are mostly complete, including one 6,000-foot raised section.

Lively said the goal is to have everything done by Labor Day.

He said meeting that goal comes down to the most complicated and critical part: tying into the 285 interchange on the south end.

"That will be the last section that the traveling public will see complete," he said.

Until then, and all final barricades and gates are in place, GDOT warns drivers not to try to use the lanes like some are already doing.

If you see orange barrels, don't drive around them because you could put yourself or workers in the system in danger.

They should just put meters in cars, like taxis. The mile data could sent real time to big gov and they take it right out of your accounts. For a small service charge of course.

How about some non-tolled, non-express lanes otherwise known as "roads."

Anyone in gubbermunt remember those?

I don’t mind the new tolled lanes.
Want free? There’s all the lanes that were there. Plenty, shared by everyone else wanting free.
Want speed? Congestion-free is available for the supply-and-demand going rate. Toll is set at whatever discourages congestion. Those fees go back to maintenance, reducing taxes for the whole road.

Especially some that bypass the hellhole of Atlanta far enough out that the locals won’t tie them up.

Been over 5 years since I went through there. Cringed when my GPS took me right through town.

Hit there about noon and pretty much had the road to myself. Couldn’t believe it

The generation of revenue comes first because all those “conservatives” as they call themselves at election time aren’t.

How do you propose to build new lanes without revenue?

That’s because rush hour ends at 10-10:30. Lots of employers are allowing flex time for workers to arrive at work. Rush hours are longer on both ends of the spectrum. I try to avoid the freeways in the morning. It’s often faster to get where I’m going using the surface streets.

As much as I’m on the road I’ll have to see if this in fact does reduce the congestion on the non toll portion of the road. If yes that’s great. If no I may spring for a Peach Pass.

Atlanta doesn’t need more lanes on the highways they have, they need more highways. Parallel routes, not bigger routes.

The whole state of Georgia needs to learn to pass in the left lane, not pace traffic to their right. You want to drive as slow as the other cars? Move right and get in line.

If they could learn this ONE thing, travel would be greatly enhanced.

I drove through Atlanta on the 75/85 connector midday on a Saturday in 2006. There was quite a bit of traffic.

That is one thing that drives me mad: left lane slowpokes.

Useless pieces of crap. Instead of toll lanes they should have just put in extra lanes. These will work as well as they do in California.....which is to say not at all

Won’t have a meaningful impact on non-toll lanes. Point is to have a fast option for those “cost is no object” times.

There are a lot of bureaucrats and agencies that need to be out of business for starters.

Rush Limbaugh conversed with Ed Gillespie when he worked for W Bush a decade or more ago about elimination of departments and Mr. Gillespie’s response....”That’s not going to happen” and so here we are 20 trillion in the hole as a nation and getting worse.

“How about some non-tolled, non-express lanes otherwise known as “roads.””

You should see the reaction here when politicians propose raising the gas tax for just that purpose.

So this is all we’re ever going to get...
