The road to an imminent electric vehicle future has hit a speed bump — one made of cobalt.

An essential ingredient in lithium-ion batteries that power millions of smartphones as well as plug-in electric cars, cobalt is in heavy demand.

A 2016 report from Amnesty International cited estimates from UNICEF that about 40,000 boys and girls work in mines across the Congo, many of them at cobalt sites.

As with adult miners, the children are exposed to high levels of cobalt and work without gloves or masks, the report said.

Hey Jerry Brown how about these "Dreamers"? Does it fit in you model for an all electric car future for California? Too bad it's produced by slave child labor in Africa.

Too bad you use Amnesty International as your reference source!

Before the politicians made their proclamations about the requirements for electric cars in the future, didn’t their exhaustive research of this new technology inform them of this potential chokepoint?? We should have been ready!! Why did they just move ahead??

Let's deny them this employment, so they can instead starve at home.

“With an eye on its growing assembly lines of EVs, China has moved quickly to gobble up stocks of cobalt. According to the CRU Group, a mineral consultancy, China controls 62 percent of the world’s cobalt supply, with 90 percent of that coming from the Congo.”

Does this answer your question? Would you be surprised to find that California politicians would cater to the desires of China? And thank you for the intelligent inquiry.

Gee, just think. All the descendants of slaves in America could be slaving in colbalt mines today if only their ancestors had not been sold to the Muslim slave traders by tribal chiefs hundreds of years ago. What a cruel fate they’ve been dealt, having to suffer in America today.

And how much cobalt is in California? There are considerable rare earth resources in California that can not be mined thanks to environmentalists.

I see the cobalt is about 36 dollars a lb now. That doesn’t sound too bad in comparison to rhodium a few years back when it was selling for over 10,000 an oz. They are just bitching cause it isn’t as cheap as it used to be.

Because they are Leftists. They are the smartest people in the room. They completely lack introspection. They never consider that their emotional decisions and desires may be wrong or even dangerous.

It is why they believe in the Leftist Perpetual Motion Machine that the rest of us with brains in our heads call Socialism. They think that they will do it right "this time".

When they are proven wrong in every damned thing. from economics to international relations to war fighting, they never, ever, Ever, EVER look back. and either learn from their failures or accept responsibility for them.

They simply pack up, move on like union representatives who have gutted an industry and a locale, and go on to the next industry and locale, like locusts preparing to devour someone else's crops while pretending that the failure never happened.

I despise Leftism.

Yes, and of course the elitists ignore the very first speed bump their arguments must face:

What is the fuel for the power plants that produce the magic electricity? By and large, it’s coal.
