With the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High shooting still looming large, its students in the Capitol to lobby for gun controls, the Florida House overwhelmingly passed a measure Wednesday its sponsor said aimed at bringing "light" to the schools.

The bill (HB 839) would require all public schools to post the state motto, "In God We Trust," in a "conspicuous place."

Sponsor Rep. Kim Daniels, a Jacksonville Democrat who runs her own ministry, said Florida needed the legislation, given the goings on in the state.

The gesture is nice...but it takes more than a phrase. It requires action.

Bravo to Kim Daniels!!!
Great to have a DemocRAT acknowledge how vital it is to put a little prayer or at least appreciation of God back in public schools.
Hope this will develop a trend in her party away from secularism, if not blatant atheism, in our education systems.

I can just hear the liberals now. They will say how can they pass a perceived (to them) meaningless symbolic bill, while ignoring the perceived (to them) crisis which they don’t want to go to waste, the crisis of school shootings.

How many people know the phrase appears in the “Star Spangled Banner?”

Yes it is. I didn’t think they existed anymore (democrats who believe in God), especially in government.

Atheists and muzzies will be offended and here comes the ACLU riding in on their black horse.

Posting it in hearts works better, and can’t be sued away by atheists.

That’s always a good idea, to trust in God, but it seems a bit off the main topics of the day, especially if you go to school in Florida.

They need to come up with #1.Better policies on how to handle students who exhibit violent or psychotic tendencies.
#2. When will the schools be allowed to expel someone who has been given numerous chances to change?
#3. Can teachers begin carrying weapons?

These are of somewhat greater urgency than posting mottos.
But everything has a beginning, right?

That’s about as useful as “Gun Free Zone” signs on schools.

Involuntary commitment in insane asylums worked for 150 years to get the insane out of society. Thank the 1970s Democrats for ending that practice. We are reaping what they sowed back then.

On 9-11, almost all of us dropped to our knees and asked God to protect us. And I'll bet there were a few atheists in the crowd.

I'm sure plenty of these parents are teaching their children the comfort of prayer.

No, it does not. The phrase in the SSB is “In God is Our Trust”, not “In God We Trust”. Slightly different..

It'd be fun to see the knickers twisted on all sides if a school rolled out "In Gods We Trust"...

Slightly different phrasing - our national motto was adopted by Act Of Congress in 1954 and is stamped on US coins.

Far better for the students to go to private Christian schools.

Don’t know if it is in the article, but Florida’s state motto has always been In God We Trust. I think it dates to the founding of the state in 1840.
And I don’t think there are any other US states that have that motto.
It only became the motto of the USA in the 1950’s.

Pretty interesting IMO
