Philadelphia’s top prosecutor said Wednesday his office will stop jailing people who cannot afford to pay cash bail in minor criminal cases, affirming the commitment of the country’s fifth-largest city to a national movement that argues the practice targets poor Americans.

District Attorney Larry Krasner said his decision to instruct city prosecutors not to seek a bail payment in a number of misdemeanor and non-violent felony crimes will correct a criminal justice system that discriminates against African-Americans, Latinos and poor people.

“There is absolutely no reason why someone who will show up for court, is not a risk of flight, is not a threat to their neighbors and community should sit in jail for days or weeks or months or years because they can’t post a small amount of bail,” Krasner said. “We do not imprison the poor in the United States for the so-called crime of poverty.” […]

“Bail is a thousand-year-old proposition from medieval times. Anything 1,000 years old probably could stand a tune up, and possibly even a real overhaul,” said Philadelphia Councilman Curtis Jones, Jr., who co-chaired a committee on reforming the city’s criminal justice system. …

Bail is written into the US Constitution in the Eighth Amendment. It is surely no anachronism.

And Parkland chose not to arrest low-risk offenders.

Thanks Olog-hai. By "low-level" crime he means, shooting to death shopowners who formerly thrived behind bulletproof glass.

The cop killer in Chicago is a four time felon. The justice system is a joke.

The Bible warns us not to show partiality in matters of justice.

That’s exactly the problem with our justice system.

So he is saying there are people in jail for years awaiting trial for petty crimes? Maybe if he thinks robbery, car jacking, assault, attempted murder, etc are low level.

Well, in his view, their only crime is being “poor”.

It’s not the left-wing politicians committing a crime that they create conditions to make them and keep them poor, of course.

There is a trend towards lawlessness in dem/lib led cities.

San Francisco, Chicago, and now Philly are neck, neck, and neck. Stay out of those cities and grab a bag of popcorn.

In other News, the number of bench warrants for “non-appearance” at trial skyrockets in Philadelphia as entire neighborhoods see record crime stats.

Philadelphia wants to get into the act... why should Baltimore have all the ‘fun’.

I wouldn’t be surprised if these sh!tholes can’t keep paying to house and feed them.

Rudy Giuliani cleaned up the NYC from “Fort Apache the Bronx” by telling cops to STOP ignoring low-level offenses; once they started booking perps for those they started catching bigger fish wanted for much more serious crimes (for example, they’d arrest someone wanted for murder after catching him jumping a subway turnstile). The improvement was fast and noticeable - in part because Giuliani governed as though Al Sharpton didn’t even exist.

I understand the logic in this. If the individual is not a threat to society why should I the tax payer give him three hot meals and a jail cell while awaiting trial.

The real danger is liberal judges that will release those that are a threat to society.

Catch and Release.

This idea works so well for the INS / ICE with illegal aliens down at the border, too!
