BRUSSELS (Reuters) - German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron on Friday asked Russian President Putin to support a U.N. Security Council resolution calling for an immediate, month-long ceasefire in Syria.

The two European Union leaders appealed to Putin -- whose military intervention in Syria gave President Bashar al-Assad the upper hand in the seven-year-old conflict -- to stop bombardments of the rebel-held pocket of eastern Ghouta.

Warplanes from Assad’s government forces and their allies pounded the densely populated enclave east of the capital Damascus for a sixth straight day on Friday.

“France and Germany call for an immediate cessation of hostilities and the implementation of a ceasefire to provide civilian support, humanitarian access and medical evacuation, as called for by the UN,” the two governments said.

It will require a global rebuke of Erdogan the Islamist to make him back away from attacking Kurds in Syria.

There is not justification for it, but it is his agenda. He is doing the same thing in Cypress, threatening to bomb offshore drilling rigs. It must stop.

Haven’t the no-war zones been cesspools for those fighting against their government to be safe?

Unless I am not remembering correctly - Ghouta is not inhabited by Kurds. So I think you are incorrectly conflating Efrin with this attack.

Anyone else?

Baloney. All a cease-fire does is allow the enemy, the jihadis, a chance to regroup. If they want a cease-fire, there’s an easy method.

You hoist a white flag and surrender to the Syrian Army, promising to become good citizens again.

I am no fan of Putin, but if Satan had a face on earth it would be Merkel.

Yes, it is insane. I’m sure Syria had to sign off on the beginning assault. Otherwise the Russians would not have given green light on air assault.

No, it is not Kurds in Ghouta, it is rebel jihadi’s. Who have been taking a beating from the Iranian forces with Assad.

Efrin citizens are Kurd, Ezidi and Alevi. And 400,000 refugees including some Arabs. These never tried to overthrow Assad or to dismember Syria. (they want the whole thing)

Most of the remaining other pockets are rebel Arab jihadi’s, many worked for the CIA year ago under Obozo.

Assad, (yesterday,IIRC) said there would be a four day ceasefire to allow for the evacuation of civilians- elderly, women, children- from Ghouta.

The Ghouta Jihadists- Al Qaeda linked Jaysh al-Islam, Jabhat Fatah al-Sham (formerly known as Al-Nusra Front), Ahrar al-Sham, and Failaq al-Rahman have been using them as human shields, and not allowed them to leave.

Meanwhile, up north in Afrin the Kurds welcomed the NDF, and SAA in to save them from Turkey.
