I don't know why, but that just made me laugh reading that...I guess it brought back memories that are only funny in retrospect, like that time I got drunk and my friends dumped me in the yard in front of my parent's house...
But your other part about trying to do a problem THEN reading the chapter is, to me, a very important philosophical one in learning.
Personally, I think it is far, FAR more valuable (as I think you do) to have the opportunity to do something, or get practical physical or job experience at something first, THEN do the book learning.
I always love the "Ahhhhhhhhh! So THAT'S why it is done that way!" moment.
FOr example, I was a chemistry major. And when I began to learn about the freezing points and boiling points of solutions, and how the minimum freezing point and maximum boiling point of a solution is obtained at a 50-50 mix of two substances...the light immediately went on for me! I realized all that time I had been putting pure antifreeze into my car (ethylene glycol) pure, instead of mixing it 50-50 with water as it instructed, was actually bad! The bulb just lit up, and I had that "Ohhhhhhhhhhh!" moment!
And I love those moments...:)
So I agree with that approach...try the problem, then learn about the hows-and-whys book learning, and it sticks better...for me, at least.
Thanks for the ping/post; posts. WOOOHOOOO rlmorel. Great work.
