Have Republicans lost their hold on Morris County? Editor's Desk By Tom Bergeron Morris County | Nov 30, 2017 at 12:01 pm

Tom Bergeron/ROI-NJ The sign commemorating Gov. Chris Christie Drive in Morris Plains. OK, let’s get the joke out of the way.

Gov. Chris Christie, whose national political ambitions were sidetracked by his connection to a traffic jam, had a short access road named after him last week.

The catch: This short road, no more than a half-mile long, is being built to alleviate traffic problems around a park in his home county of Morris.

Now, let’s get to this serious stuff. For Republicans.

The question needs to be asked: Have Republicans lost their way in Morris County, always a stronghold for the party?

The access road named after Christie is located in Morris Plains, a town that went for Phil Murphy in this year’s gubernatorial election. It’s the first time Morris Plains went for a Democratic gubernatorial candidate in 36 years, since 1981.

As someone who has lived in the borough for all but two of the last 20 years, I can tell you it was shocking to residents.

To all, that is, except longtime Mayor Frank Druetzler.

Druetzler noted the result had something to do with abysmally low approval ratings for both Christie and President Donald Trump. These numbers, Druetzler says, show up at the polls. That is, they help dictate who actually shows up at the polls.

“Republicans are not happy with what’s going on in Trenton and in Washington, so they stayed home,” Druetzler said. “Democrats are enthused, so they came out.”

More SALT deduction fallout.

Can’t say I’m surprised Morris Plains flipped D.

Its NJ, after all.

Uh, no it hasn’t flipped D. Christie was unpopular with EVERYONE!! Nobody came out to vote for NeverTrumper Kim Quadano but in the local elections the Republicans held serve which is impressive given how utterly unpopular, even hated Christie was. For example, the photo of he and his family basking on a beach closed to the public during a NJ gov shutdown really was worse than “Bridgegate.”

Murphy is not popular here either. He is making good on his promises to crap all over the NJ taxpayer.

The SALT issue won’t really cause pain until November, when GOPers in relatively conservative districts in blue states start taking on water.

If the Repub’s lose in ‘18 it will be turnout that does them in.

And, in many elections going on right now, it doesn’t look good.

I agree.

Although it's much to early for hand-wringing and fainting couches, and although it's not unusual for the party in power to lose seats during an off-year election, the results of recent local elections is a bit disconcerting ... and it's something the totalitarian, American-hating Left will continue to crow about until November.
