A Southgate man has been charged with a misdemeanor after allegedly leaving a threatening email at a Riverview church over its controversial sexual identity workshop that some people equate to conversion therapy.
Brian Carl Begin II was arraigned Feb. 15 in Wyandotte before 27th District Magistrate Elizabeth DiSanto on a single charge of misuse of telecommunications services. The charge is a six-month misdemeanor, with a fine and penalty of up to $1,000, or both.
“The workshop has gained so much negative attention on social media and news outlets that the church has canceled the workshop, fearing that protest may turn violent,” police stated in their report. “The church is receiving approximately 40 voicemail messages a minute from critics of the Unashamed Identity Workshop.”
According to police, two messages stood out from the rest. Both messages were received in the afternoon hours of Feb. 6 from a phone number registered to Begin.
In the first message, a male voice simply asks about enrolling a female in the conversion therapy workshop. The second voicemail message came from the same phone number, but this time police said the caller had a deep aggressive tone of voice and yelled into the phone.
“The first portion of the message is inaudible because the male is yelling so loud,” police state in the report. “In the middle of the voicemail the male states if the church goes through with the gay conversion therapy class in the state of Michigan, I promise every member of the Antifa will show up ‘armed and ready. This is not a joke.’”
Police say the caller then repeatedly yelled “God is dead” prior to hanging up the phone.

Michigan is generally pretty well armed. My money is on the parishioners if a bunch of belligerent AntiFa types show up.
