Billy Graham...first religious leader to lie in honor [at Capitol]. Some say he should be the last.

For seven hours Wednesday, the remains of the Rev. Billy Graham lay in honor at the U.S. Capitol Rotunda. Hundreds of people streamed past his coffin, many with tales of how the iconic pastor brought them closer to Jesus Christ. The coffin was to be escorted out of the Capitol Thursday morning for its journey to Charlotte, N.C. for a private funeral Friday.

Wednesday began with a private, televised memorial at the Rotunda, the nation’s three most powerful politicians — House Speaker Paul D. Ryan (R-Wis.), Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and President Trump — speaking of Graham’s great gift to America: his evangelism....

....But Graham, who died Feb. 21 at age 99, was of a different era, a different America in which there was even roughly a shared idea of religion....

“I don’t think we’ll ever see anything like this again,” said John Fea, a historian of American religion at Messiah College. “Graham represented the white middle class religious revival of the post-World War II era. He was the embodiment of a mass culture that was largely white and Protestant....

Barbara Perry, director of presidential studies at the Miller Center for presidential and political history at the University of Virginia, said she thinks honoring someone whose primary service was the conversion of people to a certain faith with a Rotunda ceremony violates the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment....

“Not that he shouldn’t be lauded, but does he deserve to lie in honor in the U.S. Capitol? And once you open that door, where do you stop?” Perry said. “Lying in honor should be someone who served their country. Well, how did he do that?”

Barbara Perry knows best. She apparently hates Christianity--the very religion under which the ethic was created that gives her the right to speak and practice her own non-religion.

But I digress.

Folks, the very FACT that this kind of disdain for a man of God is being published by a major media organ shows that instead of rage, we should pray--pray for forgiveness of our own sins, pray for repentance in our hearts and for revival in our churches, states and nation.

How can we as a nation stand while we continue to sin against our unborn, our Creator and His servants?

I know the thinking represented in this newspaper might be an outlier--but again, maybe not.

Bottom line is we need a spiritual awakening in this world. And America in particular. We have turned to paganism and are under judgement. Let us turn from our wicked ways.

There is no good reason to have religious leaders laid out in the Capital.

Billy Graham was one of a kind. It’s not as if we are going to see religious leaders regularly having their caskets in the Capitol.

“was of a different era, a different America in which there was even roughly a shared idea of religion”

You mean the era starting in 1620 up to Oh about 1980?

We can call that the American Era.

Currently we appear to be in the Post-American Era, dominated by 19th century Marxist ideas.

Surely you mean Capitol. It would be hard to prevent remains of religious leaders anywhere in the capital. :)

Famous last words.

Exactly. As POTUS said just look at the paintings in the Capitol rotunda and the people praying in them.

If you are asking that you are lost.

I don’t think it’s at all a coincidence that the Lord waited ‘till the last crew was out of the WH before he called Reverend Graham home. Nope, no sir.

So what are you saying? You think that this action with Billy Graham will open the floodgates of famous theologians being so honored when they pass away? Are you saying this sets a dangerous precedent? Exactly what are you trying to say?

On the one hand, yes, Billy Graham was influential and a fine man of God. However, I wonder how we will feel when an Imam is honored in the same way? This opens that door.

We are a secular Republic. Put him in a church. There are plenty of churches in D.C. if you want to make some kind of national statement.

Progressivism is a Christian heresy. It smuggles in elements of Christian faith and the Christian worldview without acknowledging their origin. This is documented in Frank Turek’s book “Stealing from God.”

“Lying in honor should be someone who served their country. Well, how did he do that?”

A quick look at this collection of photos would explain it to anybody with half a brain.

I don’t know if Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., was ever honored in the rotunda, but if he had died as an old man, he most certainly would have been. He was an ordained minister, just like Billy Graham.

Maybe you aren’t aware that the Rev. Billy Graham was friends of many presidents. Therefore, he deserves a showing in the Capitol. No other religion has been as influential in politics as Graham - Not necessarily in politics, but meeting with many presidents. I’m quite sure this honor won’t be repeated.

Also, I think this is a piece of cheap cynical theater by Paul Ryan.
