E.U. Leader Threatens Tariffs on Bourbon and Bluejeans in Retaliation for Trump’s Plan

BERLIN — The European Union will hit back at the heart of the United States, slapping tariffs on products like Harley-Davidsons, Kentucky bourbon and bluejeans, if President Trump goes ahead with a plan to place tariffs on steel and aluminum imports, the president of the bloc’s executive arm vowed on Friday.

Jean-Claude Juncker, president of the European Commission, made the remarks to the German news media in reaction to the proposed tariffs. Mr. Junker said the plans to tax the American goods, produced in the home states of key Republic leaders, had not yet been finalized, but amounted to treating them “the same way” that European products would be handled if the metals tariffs go through.

“None of this is reasonable, but reason is a sentiment that is very unevenly distributed in this world,” Mr. Juncker declared. He said any measures taken by the bloc would conform with rules set by the World Trade Organization, Mr. Juncker said.

I don’t know why Harley doesn’t just open up a plant in China.

Yes, it is noticeably absent in Europe. Possibly because they think reason is a sentiment.

Is anyone in Europe going to stop drinking Kentucky bourbon, stop riding a Harley, or buying American jeans because of an extra tax? These are luxury items already, not necessities.

Fine but France, Germany and all the other a$$hole countries in the Uropeeing Union need to pay back the cash we gave them to rebuild after WW2.

Apparently these folks do:

If the pockets are tight it won't be a problem, because you won't have much cash in your wallet after you buy them. I'm sure there are others that have a specific American made selection of jeans.

Junker is a moron. They hit our bourbon, we hit European wines and spirits. The protest would last about a week.

When the eu starts making threats, the thing that pops into my head are battle tanks with only reverse gear.

The NYTimes is just fanning the trade war flames. It’s this week’s form of “inappropriate touching”.

In the case of Harley there isn’t any technology that isn’t wide open already. It’s a matter of panache. So why not sell a bit of Chinese-made Americana to Chinese people.

Never saw any Kraut drink bourbon. Blue jeans and German men? Too funny. Perhaps a tariff on Becks beer, all Rhine wines,Hummel’s,etc. People who buy Black Forest clocks will pay more as will I for Solingen steel Henckel knives. The 5 star and up are the good ones. The French make a few good wines. Pouilly Fouisse is one. I say we need our steel plants back as I recall driving through both northern and southern cities that produced steel. One city that shocked me in less then 10 years was Birmingham, AL. In 1970 it was steel and again in 73. By the time Carter had screwed us I saw no signs of steel there.
