Yes, indeed, there was a question needed from you because while the headline and excerpt are embarrassingly incomplete, they are quite self explanatory and your comment wasn't a question - it was basically just a DOJeff supporter bat signal, to which I replied.

The only sorta halfway new info in the linked article is this:

A guy who used to be a congressman told a guy who is the brother of a now dead border agent (murdered by illegals using F&F guns found at the scene) something which all of us knew already: the DOJ does not want to hand the F&F 'documents' over to Congress.

Dead agent Terry's brother was actually tweeting to Trump for help in re-re-reopening the F&F "books." It looks like Chaffetz, never a part of the administration and no longer any part of govt, butted in on Twitland to say that when he was in Congress he asked DOJeff for the docs and "He said NO and decided to let it continue to play out in court. "

The most significant aspect of Session's reply to Chaffetz is not reflected in the excerpt above, nor in your question to me. Which is that Sessions ALREADY answered your question. Whether you/me/Congress like his answer is not relevant to the fact that he DID answer it - he's trusting the quite normal and better (in the eyes of ANY admin's AG) court route, not the political route.

As I'm sure you know, F&F is not just some scandal that happened yesterday and has never been investigated. Quite the opposite. The first version of a similarly bad idea (Bushes' 'Wide Receiver') goes back more than a decade. Obama's version (F&F) started in '09.

Obama, who is at least as deceptive as Trump and for arguably worse reasons (a dishonest reflex -vs- a questionable chess strategy), during his '12 campaign lied and naturally tried to blame both bad programs on Bush. We know that is a lie because Obama's first term included a DOJ IG investigation and report. Plus the Issa House and Grassley Senate committees both investigated and reported long ago. Mexico also years ago investigated F&F.

Despite all the typical assumptions and hand-wringing here about the upcoming DOJ IG report, the Obama era IG investigation as fairly honest. It said both the Bush and Obama boondoggles sucked in terms of failing to work and being dangerous. Though the F&F scheme was much bigger and (purposely?) much, much sloppier with many folks (at least a couple Americans) killed by the guns - something not true of the Bush scheme, far as I know.

The House, by a gigantic margin, held Holder in contempt for not doing what Sessions is currently not doing - turning over whatever documents DOJ has control over beyond the slew of reports and testimonies, etc that are already out there.

Based on all that and based on a sloppily/lazily implied notion in the article that Congress still wants Sessions to release something not released / reported / testified already... you are led to assume that the Republican held Hill still is honestly and doggedly looking for somebody to scalp for F&F. With apparently no questions being posed to any real congressmen/senator as to why they have not done to Sessions what they did to Holder - contempt? Maybe they know/trust what Sessions means about playing out in court.

Speaking of sloppy, the linked article, Terry's brother and the ex-Congressman and especially the excerpt above could all have been clearer about this aspect, but I assume the 'books' the brother wants reopened are (or include) the sealed grand jury bits from the Terry case. Though, personally, I would not hold my breath waiting for that info to produce any criminal scalps, probably just some lower/mid political kills.

And clearer about the fact that the main question is really in Trump's lap, not Sessions'. The brother was trying to tweet Trump. The ex-Con(gressman) seems to have intercepted that question. Though I assume Trump saw it too.

Sessions is a properly closed-mouth AG... for a freaking change. And he is an honest man despite all the silly things said about him here. Clearly he is saying that there is some court proceeding still or again involved. If so, he is correct to follow that route as oppose to the political route.

So, what do we know about DOJeff? :

-he is a demonstrably staunch conservative: 95% lifetime rating

-the NRA loves him: A+

-our arguably most conservative state loves him - served 20 year, won virtually all the votes last time he ran

-refreshingly, he actually already was qualified to be AG because, well, he was an AG

-he was/is Trumps first and most loyal supporter with any measure of gravitas

-he has been fantastic on Trumps numero uno campaign issue: immigration reform

-he has done other things which he does not go around bragging about because, awesome as they are, he sees it as simply doing his job. Like undoing the racist policies of Obama/Holder one of which effectively, though illegally, sorta modified the Civil Rights act (Title VI) to implement the 'disparate impact' BS via both prosecutorial stick and taxpayer-money carrots to make schools/local cops to become more like Broward's Cowards.

That should be enough info to thwart the most immature notions such as him being a RINO or similar nonsense. But emotional silliness is often stronger, or maybe just more fun, than honest reasoning it seems.

Then, Sessions himself (at least if you believe Chaffetz) already answered the only real question that applies to this topic.

If folks here want to know why an AG would prefer to go the court route rather than the political route, then ANY past or present AG can answer that as he already has and be seen by reasonable folks as a reasonable answer.

If folks want more info, then they really should be bugging his boss and/or Congress. His boss can direct him to do whatever. Congress, if they don't trust the court proceedings, can give him the Holder treatment - which, several years later now has produced nothing.

Now, I have no more hard evidence for this next theory than any of the Never-Jeffs have for their crazy theories, but...

...I tend to believe what the law of parsimony suggests is true, which is that: Sessions is still the incredibly honest, energetic and successful, demonstrably conservative, genuinely patriotic and strictly by-the-book guy he was before Trump hired him. Trump is still the strategically deceptive politician he always has been and many here constantly not only condone but cheer about such as the gun control flip flops, etc.

Then, in my admittedly maybe wrong mind, 2 + 2 = Trump using the most honest guy in that crap hole of a town to give him much needed political cover on many fronts while aggressively and publicly pursuing his most important (immigration) goals, to take phony abuse as a very-Trump-like ruse, to keep things secret which should be secret until long-fought legal traps are sprung and to generally end the thing we all used to hate about the DOJ: politicized and partial implementations of leak-driven justice in efforts to simply satisfy certain audiences.
