The Guardian ^ | 04 March 2018 | staff

The euro has recovered some lost ground and is trading at $1.232 so it’s looking like a bit of score-draw for the single currency so far. It’s a bit of a different picture for the Italian stock market which seems set to fall sharply later today. Futures trading points to a 1.3% drop in the Italy 40 index of leading companies, according to online trader IG. ...Italy’s ruling centre-left Democratic Party has admitted it had suffered a “clear defeat” in a general election after coming in third according to projections. ...More than 50% of Italians voters supported populist parties. ...The single party predicted to secure the most votes is the Five Star Movement, with about 32%. The anti-establishment party was founded nine years ago by comedian Beppe Grillo. ...A coalition of centre-right parties, led by former prime minister Silvio Berlusconi’s coalition and including the xenophobic League, is expected to win up to 36% of the vote. ...Early data shows League (17.5%) gaining more votes than Berlusconi’s Forza Italia (14.4%), giving its firebrand chief Matteo Salvini a chance to lead the coalition and be its candidate for prime minister.

prospect of hung Parliament

I guess that's not really a problem unless they start harassing the women. You know how those Italians are.

The “dream” is for 5 star to join with the center right coalition. Not sure what it would take but needs to happen. Also will be interesting to see if the League out polls B’s party.

“Also will be interesting to see if the League out polls B’s party.”

Yes with most of the votes in, the League is about 5% ahead of Forza Italia. They joined forces to form a coalition, together with two other small center right parties, but they still don’t have a majority (about 38%).

It’s going to be tough to form a government given the antipathy among the various parties.

The one that got the most votes is the Five Star Movement (31%), which is strongly anti establishment. They tend to be idealistic, well meaning, with incoherent policies. They got a lot of the youth votes and those of disillusioned Italians (which are numerous). They have almost no experience with governing.

The Lega led by Matteo Salvini has policies very close to those of Trump. Anti illegal immigrant, pro tax cuts, anti EU, Italy first, protectionist...

Preliminary results

The Center Right Lead by Silvio B placed first, within the alliance of parties though Silvio’s Forza Italia placed behind the Lega (Lega Nord which now tries to appeal to the whole country).

The 5 Star Movement placed 2nd (and was the largest single party)

Former PM Matteo “Reek” Renzi’s “center”-left placed a distant third a “dismal” performance especially given the “modest economic recovery” the media claims is going on.

What will happen? Who knows. The Center-right peeps and 5 Star cooperating is the best case. PM could be Silvio (less likley), Lega Leader Matteo Salvini or 5 Star Leader Luigi Di Maio. It sounds like Five Star will insist on taking the lead.

Possible chaos if no deal is reached. One paper (”La Stampa” in Turin) said “Di Maio wins, Italy ungovernable”. I assume it’s their equivalent of the Washington Post.

I’ve seen something posted by Wikipedia indicating the League was at 18.21 percent in proportional voting with the Five Star at 31.62 percent. Looks like right around 50 percent.

Burlesconi’s Forza Italia was at 13.84 percent I believe.

Looks good but its a complicated system of electing people some in single seats others by proportion.

The democrat party was rejected. That’s what matters. The prime minister will not be a democrat. It remains to be seen who it will be, but Renzi and Gentiloni do not have a shot at it. Probably the 5 Star guy.
The Italians have said that they do not want the democrats who have been kissing m*slim a$$. Nothing else matters.

Reek threw a tantrum, pathetic, makes Shillery look like the picture of grace.

Lega Leader Matteo Salvini insists he should be PM, Silvo supports him, the center-right alliance was just a few points short of the 40% they would needed to win outright.

5 Star leader wants to be PM himself, seems willing to work with Reeks Party. That could be bad.
