USS John McCain’s ‘sudden turn’ led to deadly collision that killed 10 sailors

A US guided missile destroyer’s deadly collision with an oil tanker near Singapore in 2017 was caused by “a sudden turn” made by the warship that put it in the path of the commercial vessel, said a report by the Singapore government Thursday.

The collision on Aug. 21, which killed 10 sailors and was one of a handful of incidents in the Asia Pacific region involving US Navy warships, raised questions about Navy training and led to the removal of a number of officers.

“The collision between the USS John S McCain (JSM) and Alnic MC (AM) as they were transiting through the Singapore Strait happened because of a sudden turn to Port by JSM, which caused it to head into the path of AM,” the report said.

Thought I’d see posts about other wrong turns made by the other McCain....Pile on....

A shame that there had to be loss of life for whatever reason the Captain wasn’t up to the job. It was part of obozo’s program to weed out the good ones and promote the slackers, wasn’t it?

The name McCain is synonymous with the destruction of military property.

Did the name of anyone on the bridge rhyme with Mohammed?

A well trained, alert “old fashioned” Mark 1-Mode A eyeball may well have been able to avert the collision.
And standard issue is TWO eyeballs per lookout, or at least it used to be in the “OLDE NAVY”.

Incredible.....won’t assign blame or determine liability and will restore basic naval skills??? I would say the time to do that is long before the ship leaves port.

“”The sudden turn was due to “a series of missteps” that took place at the control of the John S. McCain that unintentionally increased the rate of the vessel’s turn, the report by the Transport Safety Investigation Bureau said.

The agency is the air and marine accident investigative arm of the Singapore government. It said its report “should not be used to assign blame or determine liability.”

The US Navy subsequently announced a series of systemic reforms aimed at restoring basic naval skills and alertness at sea after a review of deadly ship collisions in the Asia-Pacific showed sailors were undertrained and overworked.””

An additional link in the original has this which seems to contradict about not assigning blame....

“”The two top officers of the USS John S. McCain have been fired for a “loss of confidence” following a fatal collision in August.

The Navy said in a statement that the commander and executive officer of the war ship were relieved of their duties for crashing the ship into an oil tanker near Singapore.

The crash killed 10 sailors and injured five others.

The Navy statement said it was “evident the collision was preventable, the commanding officer exercised poor judgment and the executive officer exercised poor leadership of the ship’s training program.

The commander of the Japan-based 7th Fleet was fired shortly after the crash.””

Was it a left turn?

I am answering in case your question was a serious one, and for the folks who don't know what "port" and "starboard" mean.

PORT has 4 letters. "LEFT" has 4 letters. Port = Left

Starboard isn't 4 letters, so it must be right.

Hey, I had lots of time at the wheel while helping Dad doing charterboat fishing, Dad had to teach me something!

I know what port and starboard are. I thought a reference to “left turn” in the context of John McCain was an obvious political joke, but I guess I was wrong.

Thanks for the nautisplaining anyway.

So very true. As a former QM Naviagator in the USCG I have seen my share of bad OOD officers and have had to question their decision more than once. I even called the captains cabin a few times to have him “wonder” up to the bridge. Visual navigation is being lost to electronic charts, no one walks to the bridge wing anymore and looks around. This action is inexcusable.
