Very close nomination race for party leader, who is close to a lock to be the next Premier in Ontario. Sounds like Ford won based on the system for weighing votes (by riding, the equivalent of state house districts), with enough minor glitches to make it so that the results are not certain to the last decimal point, but are statistically certain. The second place candidate isn't conceding. Ford is basically the Ontario equivalent of Trump, so in the end this looks to be a good thing--esp. as the glitch will be good grounds for cleaning house within the party executive.

Basically. Think “New York Republican.” Usually horrible but still better than the alternative—and on a good day they sometimes get something right.

I once had a set of JC Higgins golf clubs with Doug Ford’s name on them...

They are the provincial equivalent of the federal Conservative Party.

There’s a loose relationship between provincial and federal parties in Canada.

The PCs face tough odds in unseating the Ontario Liberals in the next election.

Even with this convention debacle, they are the odds-on favourite. Wynne, the current premier, is approximately as popular as Chris Cristie, but with the ethical reputation of one of New Jersey’s Senators. The previous P.C. leader had been elected by running a truly conservative campaign, and then, in putting together a platform and running the party, betrayed his base entirely. When he resigned as the result of a sex scandal about six weeks ago, the party went up ten points in the poll.

The P.C.s are about the most inept party there is for campaigning, but I think that even they will have a very hard time snatching defeat out of the mouth of victory on this one.

A link to a National Post Article. Granic, a social conservative outsider, likely ended up causing Ford to win by energizing the conservative base—the voting system is preferential, and her supporters would likely either list Ford as second or list no one as second. That she topped Mulroney (Brian’s daughter, and the race’s top fundraiser) is remarkable, and that she was a “strong third” even more so.

Then again, only just over 60,000 people voted, so energizing is a relative thing.

The Elliot supporters (total CINO’s) refused to support a delay in voting to sort out membership validation.

until today when they lost the vote, so now they are delaying the result, trying to “recount” the ballots to get the correct result.

Yeah. Hypocrisy without bounds. I’m glad my wife talked me into putting Elliot 4th, about 24 hours after I talked her into putting Mulroney 4th.

Still, the best 7 weeks in Ontario politics in several years—and with hind sight, perhaps close to 20 years.

Am I wrong in thinking the party establishment sabotaged Ford?

I don’t think they are competent enough to be able to rig an election. But not from lack of Iill-will

I always thought this an oxymoron as well, but I guess it depends what they’re “progressing” toward.

Nationally they call themselves “The Conservative Party of Canada” nowadays after a third reformist party split the old “Progressive Conservative Party” back in the 1990’s until there was a union under the new label.

The “Progressive Conservative” label was first used in the 1935 national election in Canada because the Depression was driving most voters towards the Liberals and away from the “Conservative Party”.

The Liberals won the election anyway back then, but the PC label endured nationally for decades and is still used provincially in Canada.

I’ve just been reading they haven’t called the election yet....pulled a Podesta and told everyone to go home.

I hope Ford gets in. When I listened to the debate I heard a man being very careful not to mention the name “Trump” (basically a swear word up here), but give credit, with admiration, to his economic policies. I dislike and wouldn’t trust for a minute Elliot or Mulroney. Allen needs to be seated at the table - she’s strong and right.
