Skip to comments.Letís have a good-faith argument about socialism

Last week, I wrote a column arguing that liberals concerned about ongoing failures in the American experiment should consider socialist remedies. I knew there would be quite a bit of disagreement. And I knew that most though, crucially, not all of it would unfold in bad faith.
What is bad faith? Its a term coined by the philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre that means, in the helpful gloss of George Mason University anthropologist Roger Lancaster, when you tell a lie and you start to believe it, then forget it was a lie. In the argumentative context, engaging in bad faith means to engage without really trying to understand or address the opposing view, which usually manifests in profound mischaracterizations of the other side. At that point especially when caught up in the thrilling energy of group condemnation its easy to forget that youre arguing against a position of your own invention.

That wealth is working well for the folks in Venezuela
Is this that same ditzy broad who said we need to “give Socialism a try”? I responded then that she should move to North Korea for 5 or 10 years and report back to us on how that worked out.
Let's start with interviews of typical North Korean citizens. Then move on to typical Venezuelan citizens. Then on to East Germans...South Africans...Mexicans....
Why not start with truth in nomenclature? Rename the Democratic Party the “Democratic Socialists”. The appellation “Democat” should always be followed by the word socialist.
Send her to Venezuela to experience socialism first hand.
Huge oil reserves + tiny population = affluence. But I've read that Norway's oil is running low.
It is impossible to have a “good faith” argument about a socio-economic system that is rooted in a doctrine of bad-faith regarding human behavior.
Leftist are so freaking stupid, She talks about arguing in bad faith while she clings to one example when there are literally hundreds of examples that show the disaster of socialism. Yeah she’s a real intellectual Giant.
Seriously — we do not even need to pretend to have this discussion.
Socialism has been around for a long time. It fails everywhere (Norway hasn’t run out of other people’s money yet, but it will not last). Socialist governments have killed over 100 million people. It’s bad. It’s a failure. The test results are in.
No need for discussion.
Karl Marx said that the goal of Socialism was Communism.
if she loves Norway so much, she should up and move there.
if she insists that other nations aren’t “real Socialism” why doesn’t she move to one of those and push for “reform Socialism”?
Why does she claim that the American way is just a “failed experiment”?
Socialists have been saying for years, “we’ll get it right this time.”
The Left can’t win a debate. In the real world, its shadow banning opponents, purging social media accounts and trying to brownbeat conservative sites out of business by demonetizing them and denying them traffic.
And they come and tell how wonderful socialism is? What they’re doing is the essence of socialism!
A bad tree does not produce good fruit.
And what, exactly, would be different from the other multitude of arguments on socialism.
Put simply, the Left almost never negotiates or argues in good faith, and in those few good faith times are when they know retribution is sure and swift if they break an agreement. In fact, they're like the kid in school that spends the same (or more) time trying to cheat on a test, where if the same effort were spent studying, they could do just as well.
I am all for socialism as long as I can be in charge of redistributing the services.
