Trump: U.S. is going to Mars 'very soon'

Pres. Trump at CA Marine base: "Very soon we're going to Mars. You wouldn't have been going to Mars if my opponent won." https://t.co/7t9dGZXwSH pic.twitter.com/a3Cw5OIsue — ABC News Politics (@ABCPolitics) March 13, 2018

President Trump told troops in California on Tuesday that the U.S. would be going to Mars in the very near future.

"Very soon we're going to Mars. You wouldn't be going to Mars if my opponent won, that I can tell you. You wouldn't even be thinking about it," Trump said.

Trump signed a directive in December aiming to send Americans to the moon, and eventually Mars.

The directive orders NASA “to lead an innovative space exploration program to send American astronauts back to the Moon, and eventually Mars,” according to the White House.

The president has made various changes to U.S. space policy during his first year in office.

Trump's space policy will replace former President Obama’s, which did not include a goal to return to the Moon. Obama’s policy focused on sending astronauts to deep space and potentially an asteroid by 2025, and to orbit Mars by the mid-2030s.

Vice President Pence announced the relaunch of the National Space Council last year.

The council works to centralize various federal agencies with oversight into space policy.

“Under President Donald Trump, America will lead in space again and the world will marvel,” Pence said.

"Our National Space Council will help our nation re-energize the pioneering spirit of America," he continued. "And it will ensure that America never again loses our lead in space exploration and technology."

The Prez has certain people in mind to send to Mars. If I were Jeff Flake I’d be concerned

What, an actual space program instead of Obama’s reach out to the Muslim world?

I was not aware that Tsiolkovsky, Goddard, Oberth and von Braun were Muslim.

I’m glad we’re going back to the moon. Imagine how much better their mission audio-video will be. If I can’t go to the moon myself, could I at least make a phone call to one of our astronauts without having to be POTUS?...And if the line is busy, I’ll just leave a short message.

with all due respect, we’ve been “going to Mars” since I was little. I won’t hold my breath.

Doen’t every president declare something like this then after a few billion dollars gets spent on research the next president cancels the project?

Yes, but...

Name one thing which Donald Trump said he was going to do, which he is not currently working on?

Just one.

A couple weeks ago, I would have said “build our wall on the southern border”, and “get much, much, much tougher on trade with the world’s biggest trade cheat, China”.

I would have said both of those things. I would have said them loudly, and increasingly I would have said them as someone who is starting to doubt the President, who I have supported since very early.

Now am very enthusiastic once again.

So. Speaking of our President now. What has he said he would do, which he is not now not currently working on?

Hmm?

‘Very soon we’re going to Mars’

for what purpose, terraforming...? not too bloody likely; at best it would be akin to life during the Ice Age...

We could have put men on Mars by 1985.

Von Braun said we could, and he was right about the moon by 1970.

We had the mighty Saturn V available for a Mars launch..then they shut down the assembly line.

If you want to go to Mars now, and on the cheap, just go ask Robert Zubrin about it.

If you watch NASA work, you realize this is their plan. They plod along, spending money until the program is cancelled. NASA has no intention of ever sending humans anywhere because every plan requires 20 or more years, guaranteeing that they can count on a democratic administration to cancel the whole thing after billions has been spent but well before they actually have to do anything that carries any real risk.

You will not see it before you die. We can’t even go to the moon again.

i was talking abut the next president canceling whatever projects trump is talking about then announcing his or her own after billions of dollars spent.
The next one will proclaim “We are going to visit an asteroid!”
Billions of dollars later and then a new president and the asteroid project gets cancelled.
That president then announces “We are going to the moon!”..........repeat ad nauseam
