On my first show for MSNBC last June, I sat down at Langley with CIA Director Mike Pompeo, now President Trump’s nominee for secretary of state. A quick read of the transcript will not only explain the sudden change at Foggy Bottom but also should reassure any fair-minded person that a much-needed infusion of talent and presidential trust is on the way.
It’s been hard to find anyone in the White House to say a bad word about the character or personality of Rex Tillerson or a good word about his leadership at State. The friction between the White House personnel shop and Tillerson’s chief of staff, Margaret Peterlin, is the worst-kept secret inside the Beltway, and the glacial pace of staffing up the political ranks has angered national security conservatives. Those foreign policy wonks tend to admire the director of policy planning, Brian Hook, but look in vain around the department for anyone else with anything resembling a theory of the world on which to operate the world’s link to the United States.
Other key jobs remain unfilled, including the undersecretary for arms control and international security affairs and the U.S. representative to the U.N. mission in Geneva; both jobs have much to do with holding Iran to account to the deal struck under the Obama administration. The undersecretary for management is another empty office, even though veterans of the bureaucracy from past Republican presidents remain available.
Tillerson has also failed to push nominees for crucial ambassador posts, such as Richard Grenell as ambassador to Germany, the most important non-nuclear power in the world. Other important embassies, such as those in South Korea, Turkey and South Africa, lack even a nominee, though numerous and very qualified candidates abound.

Hugh “Cheap Labor Express” Hewitt does not care about national security or he wouldn’t keep pushing amnesty.
Ping to another good article on why Trump needed to change the SOS. It’s Hugh Hewitt authoring & normally I’m skeptical of him, but what he says here is what I’ve been picking up from other sources for months .... staffing up hasn’t been happening at State & Tillerson isn’t in sync with Trump’s views on things. I hope Pompeo is as good as Hewitt (and others) think he will be. Tillerson also has not been doing much of anything at State to get court ordered Hilly emails released in a timely manner (Judicial Watch has complained bitterly about this) - hopefully Pompeo will make this a higher priority. There’s no love lost between Pompeo & Hilly - she outright lied to him during the Benghazi hearing & he was well aware of it since he already knew the answer to the question he asked her.
The irony is that the career bureaucrats at State are also happy to see Tillerson and his team go.
On that issue they’re in agreement with Trump.
Agree that TRex was way too inexperienced with the ways of the Company and its affiliates to discern when he was being rolled
not to mention the State Department was and still is a Clinton-Obama bureaucratic viper pit

Before the regular FReeper virtue signallers pile on their requisite trashing of Hugh Hewitt, let me say that this is an excellent and insightful article. Once again, President Trump has demonstrated that he sees clearly and acts purposefully and decisively.
Hewitt is defending Trump’s decision to fire Tillerson; you object to that?

I doubt that Trump will remain in the Iran deal past May.
Tillerson did a good job in some areas.
He was a vast improvement over Kerry and Clinton.
He improved America’s reputation in the world and along with Trump vastly improved the situation in Saudi Arabia and the middle East.
However, he failed to surround himself with a quality team at State and allowed himself and Trump to be sabotaged by the swamp creatures that control the State Department. He was particularly bad on Iran.
It was time for for him to go and he did not seem sorry to leave.
I’m glad Hewitt spoke out. And I’m sure such a story was in the works for some time.
Michael Savage was flying off the handle yesterday that “the way” T Rex was fired was undignified.
The Hewitt story fills in the blank. Trump was purposely sending a message to Tillerson. The President was displeased and now we’ll hopefully start seeing some action at the State Department.
Savage may have been playing some theater. It seems he tries to criticize Trump on purpose to prove he’s not a shill for the Trump. I like Savage a lot, but you often have to take his rants with a grain of salt.
With this new intelligence, I wonder if Savage will change his tune. Probably not. I’ve never heard a conservative radio personality apologize — or admit they were wrong.
Tillerson helped with SA in a nasty corner of the world. Clearly details were slipping at state and Tillerson was not and is not a details guy. As head of EM, he wasn’t filling position requisitions or taking orders from anyone.
Plus, if you are not on board with policy, you gotta go. Finally, he is useless when talking about NK.....which is the piñata we have to destroy next.

Rex Had his fair shot. He took the job and immediately started disagreeing on policy. I don’t think he was overwhelmed but I don’t think he was served very well by the career bureaucrats.
I like his behind the scenes style, but still can’t get over where he felt he was entitled to disagree with Trump’s policies and goals and then let it leaked.
How apropos that Hugh is writing at Bezos Blog (WaPo).
