Voters in Illinois head to the polls this Tuesday. They should vote for Jeanne Ives in the Republican gubernatorial primary over the thoroughly disappointing incumbent governor Bruce Rauner, who has forfeited any claim on his party's nod.
Failing to pass the fiscal reforms he promised wouldn’t alone justify his ouster in the primary. But Rauner’s duplicity on the issue of abortion should be disqualifying to conservatives. During the election, Rauner — who is pro-choice, had once donated to Planned Parenthood, and whose wife is an abortion-rights activist — insisted that he was merely running to fix the state’s coffers. He had, he said, “no social agenda.” When a bill to guarantee abortion as a right if the Supreme Court ever overturned Roe v. Wade and provide public money for abortions through all nine months of a woman’s pregnancy began circulating in the state legislature, Rauner said he would veto it. In September, he signed it into law. Pro-lifers who voted for Rauner put their trust in a man who is now forcing them to underwrite third-trimester abortions. His record is not just dreadful, but features a glaring lie.
Which is why Jeanne Ives, a state legislator, is a better alternative. Ives is an underdog and lacks Rauner’s resources, but she is both a superior candidate to the governor and a solid politician in her own right. One recent poll has her just 7 points behind Rauner. For his part, the governor is running far behind the likely Democratic nominee — J. B. Pritzker, a cat’s paw of Madigan — and has been unwilling to engage Ives in debate after an embarrassing showing in a joint appearance with her at the Chicago Tribune editorial office. Illinois Republicans should vote for Ives, the only conservative on the ballot.

She’ll lose in November. Rauner was the best we could do 4 years ago. Kinda like Arnold in Calif. 12 years after Bob Corker’s ‘best we could do’ victory it’s time for a change. Don’t think it will work in Illinois. Maybe we’ve already had enough of Rauner the first time around. Arnold could have done more for McKlintock to be his Lt. Gov. in 06’ but it’s best not to waste time hoping for these RINO’s will do the right thing.
Just saying, as an Illinois resident, it does not matter. I don’t think there is anything to be done. And when republicans get in office they share the blame. So I don’t vote.
Here in Illinois we have a huge debt. Not small debts like in other states. We are larger than New Jersey and California. And we can’t do anything to stop it. Our constitution requires that we pay public pensions that are far better than any pension in the world. They start at 55 with 75% of last three years salaries. Then they go up at 3% a year for life. And to top it off we have to pay it to anybody who worked even one day 20 years ago as a public employee in Illinois. As long as you get one working day under this plan you cannot change it. The Illinois supreme court struck down any changes.
So all these people run on making it better. Of course you can’t make it better. Plus the dems own both houses. And the governor does not have the power he has in other states. He cannot stop payment. So winning the governorship does not help solve the problems of Illinois. We just need to slowly go bankrupt and hope for the deal NY had in the 70’s.
People here don’t do math very well. They think this problem is going to get better some how. The press is really the cause of this. The Tribune company that owns the biggest newspaper TV and radio channels are to blame as well as anybody. They trade government headlines from leakers for support of government pension editorials.
The result is that lots of upper middle class Illinois residents move out of the state. Or live out of the state for 6 months and a day. My house is the same value it was 20 years ago. As soon as interest rates go up or the stock market goes down, Chicago, cook county and the state of Illinois are screwed.
Oh and by the way, pensions are not taxable income here in Illinois. So the public workers pay no state income tax here even with their six figure incomes. Another way to think of it is this. If you were to attribute to all Illinois pensioners wealth as including their pension value as a guaranteed tax free annuity, they would all be millionaires, most would be worth over $4 million dollars each.

PBRCat has described the problem perfectly. Until Ed Burke’s wife and the rest of this state Supreme Court that is devoted to screwing over the taxpayers to benefit their friends and relatives all die then this state will not get any better.
Their about face is welcome, the fact they don't want to admit they were wrong last time around and apologize for touting Rauner's "conservative" credentials to their readers is not.
I've noticed this pattern a lot with the Johnny-come-late crowd hoping on the Ives camp AFTER the damage is done. They seem to have amnesia remembering that they promoted this liberal scumbag over three other GOP candidates to his right:

2018 - Gosh, I ONLY voted for Rauner cuz Quinn would have been worse. There were NO OTHER OPTIONS. What should I have done, voted for Quinn?
I’m dead set on letting the Dems have it all and watching it blow up in their faces. The state is only going to resolve their sad state of affairs if there is enough pain from the people....
The Rauner campaign was aided by an underhanded attack on one of his primary opponents (the incumbent Illinois Treasurer) in 2014 and the useful idiots in the media pushed the dubious story for all that it was worth. Rauner was nominated by an unimpressive plurality. Rauner’s minions pushed the scandal. Subsequently, the issue faded away.
Apart from his inept governance, one of Rauner’s greatest crimes is that he failed to clean house as the titular head of the Republican party. He has been quite comfortable allying himself with all of the corrupt elements — people that could be bought off and or handed patronage jobs.
Yep, I've been saying that for weeks, though its pointless to discuss it now since it won't change the outcome. The bottom line is that Rutherford was polling in 1st, he was in Rauner's way (the GOP establishment in this state couldn't claim the pro-life & pro-gun Rutherford was "unelectable" statewide since he ALREADY held statewide office), so they drummed up some phony "scandal" to destroy his candidacy and he finished in a distant 4th place. Same thing with the bogus "allegations" against Roy Moore. These accusers disappear quickly after the election, and we never hear about the "allegations" again once they they've done their job and destroyed this person's political career.
Leftists like to scream "HOMOPHOBIA!!!" at anything and everything, though in this case it might actually apply, since I knew numerous Rauner "conservatives" who openly stated that they'll take a socially liberal candidate who DOESN'T agree with them but has been married to a woman for 30 years over a single man who DOES agree with them on social issues (and Rutherford was on record being AGAINST legalizing gay marriage, BTW), but whom they perceived as "gay".

Well, Rauner went on to win the primary and happily sign into law all the legislation that Rutherford would have vetoed (abortion on demand, sanctuary state, etc.), but they can pat themselves on the back that they didn't get a "gay" Governor. Cuz you know, the fact the Governor is married to a woman (and his wife is a proud marxist card-carrying Democrat, BTW) is way more important than stopping socialism in this state, I guess.
The lesson to be learned here is conservatives need to STOP caving like a ton of bricks every time the left drums up a phony "sexual harassment" scandal.

You have a valid point, but didn't we already try that in Illinois in 2006 and 2008? 2010 should have been a much bigger anti-incumbent wave that it was, since the Democrats had everything in this state and it hit rock bottom.
I've been pretty cynical about ANYONE decent winning in this state after Tony Pericia and Bill Brady "lost" against the worst RAT incumbents ever.
Prickwankle makes me yearn for Stroger back, much like Quinn made look back fondly at Blago.

Of course, the lawyer who pushed the lawsuit that smeared Rutherford had ties to Rauner and the accuser had ties to the Democrats.
The accuser holds a Democratic patronage job. The lawyer packed her bags and moved from the city to the suburbs where she was slated for judge in a Republican leaning district.
