A president has every legal authority to fire a “special prosecutor” given such a position NOT by a law legislated by Congress but by mere appointment from within the DOJ procedures. Such a prosecutor is as subject to being fired by the president as is the attorney general. That makes your suggestion (an excuse) NOT a reflection of a anything any law demands, but a reflection of your own political desire, period.

Maybe, maybe not. Really it should be the House judiciary committee that ends the investigation. The timing of it is tricky though...

• You want the investigation to play out and find nothing, assuring the American people that there was no collusion except by democrats.
• And at the end, you want the investigators to be able to say, yes we looked everywhere including payments to the Trump Organization and didn't find anything.
• You want the investigation to turn up legitimate wrong doing, whether it was by Republicans or Democrats including those in the previous administration.
• But you want the investigation to be impartial. And all the evidence points to this hasn't been impartial at all.
• And you don't want the FBI trapping people. And perjury traps seem to be the main tool these days.
• You don't want the investigation to bog down the President. If it has been, I can't tell it.
• You don't want people destroyed by legal costs if they did nothing wrong. Not sure whether Manafort did anything wrong or not.
• You don't want the FBI distracted from it's other duties and investigations. Like Uranium One or potential school shooters.
