US President Donald Trump’s “Taiwan Travel Act” continues to draw ire from Chinese authorities. Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Lu Kang said Saturday the bill “severely violates” the “one China” principle and sends “very wrong signals to the ‘pro-independence’ separatist forces in Taiwan.”

“China is strongly opposed to [the bill],” Lu said in a statement. “We urge the US side to correct its mistake, stop pursuing any official ties with Taiwan or improving its current relations with Taiwan in any substantive way,” he added.

In a separate statement, Chinese defense ministry spokesman Wu Qian said the act “interferes in China’s internal affairs.”

China urges the US to “stop pursuing any US-Taiwan military ties and stop arms sales to Taiwan, so as to avoid causing serious damage to the bilateral and military relations between China and the US, and to the peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait,” the statement said. …

Someone remind me...Didn't we win Taiwan from the the Japanese at the end of WWII? We have a more recent and better claim to Taiwan than the Chinese. Maybe we should talk about them as an American protectorate.

China would have invaded Taiwan long ago of it weren’t its ties to the USA which pre-existed Trump by decades.

It’s a bad idea to provoke China over Taiwan issue.

The sick thing is that screwing Taiwan over by favoring Red China over them in the UN was one of the goals of communists (from the list of 45 stated goals) that the Uniparty handed to them. Even George W. Bush handed Red China the “most favored nation” status repeatedly.

Why, because we should be afraid of China for our very existence?

Of many things we ought to have done, not fighting back against Red China while we were in Korea was one of the biggest mistakes (which MacArthur wanted to do). Nixon’s undue rapprochement with Mao was just as big of a mistake.

MacArthur couldn’t win in Korea. Under his command, UN coalition suffered heavy loss, actually he was ousted from his post by China.

We have to have some ties because it is dangerous there and we need to be able to operate safely in the China Sea.

China Mainland is actually making this more necessary not less.

Meanwhile, Obama looked the other way while those artificial islands got built, the PRC navy threatened our ships, and Duterte developed ties with Beijing.

He certainly COULD have won had the “conflict” been run by the military, who were ready to use nukes if necessary. He complained about that and as a result was canned. Yes, it was a big mistake, and led to other mistakes like Vietnam.

I hope President Trump tells the Chicoms where they can put their threats.

To show our resolve that Taiwan should remain Independent,we should arm them to the teeth with anti-air assets as well as Anti ship missiles.

Millions of Chicom troops will have to swim the Taiwan strait too invade the place.

Hum. Perhaps we should technically dangle that fact around.
I know a President who would.

I do not know if we would want them as an actual protectorate. Taiwan would empty itself into California. (Although this might actually be an improvement!)
A threatened protector-ship has perhaps more diplomatic leverage.

Humm. Does Taiwan get any say?
