Anti H1B posters plastered in the heart of Silicon Valley train network BART
Firstpost ^ | Mar 19, 2018 | Nikhila Natarajan

Anti H1B posters have been plastered in Bay Area Rapid Transport (BART) train stations, will soon be seen inside trains in the heart of San Francisco Bay Area and will stay there for at least a full month in an ad buy worth $80,000 bang in the middle of the new H1B filing season which opens April 2.

BART is among the busiest rapid transport systems in the United States with an average of ~ 425,000 weekday passengers and ~124 million annual passengers in fiscal year 2017.

Paid for by Progressives for Immigration Reform, the anti H1B ad’s lexicon fans the very flames of anti-immigrant sentiment that put Trump into the White House.

Addressing “US tech workers”, the ad says “Your companies think you are expensive, undeserving & expendable. Congress, fix H-1B law so companies must seek & hire U.S. workers!”

“I’ve lived here for 10 years. I’ve never seen so much anger against us. Remember, this is not a dark alley, it’s an essential public transport system. Thousands of people are going to be seeing these posters. Imagine the possible consequences…”, says Bharati, a Bay Area H1B worker who says she feels “lucky” she can drive to work and not have to take the train with these ads plastered everywhere.

Firstpost left messages over the weekend to speak with Progressives for Immigration Reform, the organisation that has reportedly paid for the ads.

In a report headlined BART reluctantly allows group to paper stations, trains with ads attacking visa, Mercury News reports that Progressive’s $80,000 buy covers more than “250 panel ads and 100 smaller in-train ads, which will be seen on both sides of the Bay”.

On Twitter, BART riders and techies in the city are reacting with disgust and shock.

Awful, anti-immigrant ads in the BART station today. Where can I donate to support the exact opposite of this? 😞 pic.twitter.com/24x23OmV8S

— Don McCurdy (@donrmccurdy) March 16, 2018

“BART is supposed to be for everyone!!! How will immigrants feel when they see these disgusting advertisements on their commute?”, writes Karin Spirn on the same thread.

Progressives for Immigration Reform and ustechworkers.com are the two names listed on the ad that’s circulating online. Progressives for Immigration Reform’s motto aligns neatly with the nativist policies of Trump's immigration policy lead Stephen Miller at his fiery best. It is timed to coincide with the H1B filing season that opens April 2, just after Easter weekend in the US.

How an ad campaign like this will do in a blue state like California is merely a fringe issue. Campaigns like these are fairly easy to replicate and seed in an exponential fashion because of sheer location where millions of people must travel every day. If cash flow is not a concern for lobbyists hell bent on maligning the H1B visa, then every Indian stronghold in America is a potential target for this hate campaign in a crucial election year.

“hate campaign in a crucial election year.”

If you disagree with a Leftist on policy, you are a deplorable racist hater. You can’t just disagree on policy.

As an American engineer all am can say is. It’s about damn time!!

The influx of illegals and the tax incentives to export technology design centers to China, India, Taiwan and others has devastated the American middle class and drive to be an engineer. Becoming an engineer is HARD!! And the job security once you graduate is non-existence. I left the private segment and now work for NASA. I make half of what I made but have security. The number of kids going into STEM has plummeted because kids see their family devastated by parents losing jobs. Why go into a field that is hard, has no security, makes you study and take ridiculous unrelated classes (2 years of foreign language for a Electrical Engineer degree??), will leave you with a huge debt and not even a stable job.

My wife and I just completed a Federal Home Loan Mortgage License class and can make more at this starting, than 25 years of R&D in Tech earns. That’s what H1B has done.

Hiring of Qualified Americans instead of piss-poorly paid H-1B substitutes who are shacked up five high and three deep in crappy apartments is not Racist.

U.S. Chamber of Commerce can go F themselves.

These companies have lied to Congress for decades when they’ve claimed that there are insufficient workers in the United States.

And IBM acknowledged it a few years back when a VP told laid off white workers to move to India where they would be paid less but their paychecks would go farther.

Billion dollar companies want to keep the money for the top of the chain and depress the wages for all others. I am paid less today (without even adjusting for inflation) than I was in 1994. My whole department is in this crap boat (each with 25+ years experience) at a major tech company.

The ads were posted by Progressives for Immigration Reform. Doesn't sound like a very conservative group.

Unfortunately they don't realize that this won't change anything. Race baiters practicing demographic warfare against white people on the left and corporatists on the right are aligned on the issue of H1B visas.

And for the record there is no shortage of technical talent in the American workforce. Businesses just like the lower prices and greater control they have over H1Bs.

About time! these need to go up everywhere. And how does an H1B, like quoted in the article, be here for 10 years?! Surely the company can find, even hire and train and American in that time! Outrageous and proves the need to end H1B now.

Some top ranked graduate students from Stanfurd and other fine universities have not even been allowed to sit for perfunctory interviews in Silly Con Valley.... the electronics corporations prefer to import (somewhat) cheaper and (much more, they think) compliant labor from Communist China (and in programming jobs, India).

This has been going on for at least half a century and every USA administration has played along (taken the Silly Con Valley corporate money) ... and let the companies get away with this.

This is not limited to the big Californication corporate wheels, either. While the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (basically still a management front organization) has pretty effectively scrubbed, cleaned out the history (especially hard now to find it on the internet), one Irwin Feerst nearly secured election (many say he did so .. but that the corporate management officers threw away a big box full of his ballots)..........nearly secured election as an upstart “working level engineer’ candidate for the IEEE Presidency. In the 60’s or 70’s. He was from New York and his main complaint, cause was exactly the same, to try to get some controls, limits on the big companies’ reserving so many jobs for “cheap” imported labor.

So really, there is nothing new under the sun (King Solomon was correct), and today the MAJORITY of the Silly Con Valley labor force are from Communist China, India, Asia, etc. Plus, these are not stupid people.. some of them have gone off payroll to start their own companies here... and they reportedly hire almost exclusively import labor, too

It is amusing to see all the fuss and bother being stirred up to try to get American school kids to study “STEM” .. science, technology, engineering, math subjects. But the kids aren’t idiots... they can see that the employment opportunities right here in USA are so limited as they are.....at least, limited to American students... and so they either study other EASIER subjects (many of which have very limited employment opportunities, too, but at least they’re easier subjects...why take hard courses if you’re gonna be discriminated against and left unemployed when you graduate, may as well take easy subjects and enjoy your salad days)

it is bad for America, not that I am saying to stop all import labor....but let’s at least give our own kids a chance at American jobs first!

The elimination of H1B is being spearheaded by Indians in Silicon Valley whose children who are now computers sci. graduates can’t find high paying jobs. Go figure...

Could be, could not be. I can name a group anything I want.

But sometimes you don't pick your allies, your allies pick you.

Think strategically.

“U.S. Chamber of Commerce can go F themselves.”

I cannot agree more. I wonder if they registered as representatives of a foreign government under the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA)? It would be a shame to have to convict them for failing to do so.
