The problem with Air BNB is all the extra charges they tack on. You try to compare motel rates with airBNB, think you’re getting a deal, and realize you could have had a decent motel room for the same price or cheaper. And the motel cleans your room and makes your bed every day.

AirBnb is big business now. People buy multiple properties solely to rent them out on AirBnB. That is a hotel and not a private residence. Regulation is inevitable here, IMO.

In this case the owner bought the home JUST TO RENT through Airbnb———a residential street in one of the most affluent towns in MA.

Frightening.

This is not uncommon and why AirBnB regulation is inevitable.

I’ve had good luck with AirBnB in Europe. Usually much cheaper than a nice hotel. But I didn’t need parking there and that can be a hassle in the US. Also, in Europe they have a much longer history of renting private apartments. You’ll find whole buildings where all the flats are rented by the night over there.

Yes, I agree.
AirBnb is big business and they do control a lot of rentals all over the world. They run into this kind of trouble often and have a large staff to handle the various regulations that they need relief with. They also try to influence political propositions that are proposed to ban their type of business.

AirBnb does pay tax and comply with regulations in cities where they demand this. I suppose eventually that will be all cities. Their biggest problems are in San Francisco which is their world headquarters.

They act like a hotel with differences. They try to present themselves as local experts and provide a visitor with more than the usual hotel experience. Also they are usually not located where hotels generally are. Finally, they will rent to groups and allow them all to use the same residence if it is large enough. They are often more convenient and can be booked quickly (most of the time) and this can save a vacation when hotels are booked up.

I do live in a condo in a Golf and Country Club and yes, they will not let AirBnb in. They do let people rent some residents as long as the tenant meets the age restrictions and agrees to follow their many rules. (Need to have one tenant be over 55 years old)

Oh, my source is a family member who was an AirBnb employee once upon a time.

.
This is a “Bill of Attainder.”

Such legislation is not generally looked upon favorably by the courts.

One of the most infamous question asked at Reddit for these AIRBNB clowns is, “if you live in apartments, why would you want to rent and live in ANOTHER apartment? Dont you want a change of scenery aka hotel where you have the feel of travelling and being outside your normal life?”

AirBNB is touting this as an "authentic experience" -- living among the natives vs. a bland or sterile hotel. I personally prefer a hotel, and there are plenty boutique ones with their own charming flavor & experience. Also, with a hotel you're more assured of basic amenities, whereas the apartments on AirBNB are hit & miss.

Like many in this thread, I have mixed feelings about AirBNB. While I can see its potential for additional income & tourism, it creates unpleasant situations for the neighbors -- i.e. weird or unruly guests, trash, crime, destruction of property or atmosphere.

Interestingly, the Millennial woman living with me used to rely heavily on AirBNB for travel. Next week, she is going to Guatemala -- however, this time staying at youth hostels. Maybe that's the next big thing.

Yep, i have this sneaking suspiscion that a lot of people who call themselves capitalists and property rights advocates would recoil in abject horror if faced with true capitalism

As my dad would say “they probably don-t get out much”

The airBnbs in Europe are unbelievable! My friends and I looked at a gorgeous old stone farmhouse, completely updated, in the Loire Valley in France for a steal. My son rented one right by the Vatican for the equivalent of about $100/night that he’s splitting with his traveling buddy next month. Their prices rival the pensions.

“however, this time staying at youth hostels. Maybe that’s the next big thing.”

I traveled to Europe back in the late 2000’s around 3 times and Asia more than a dozen. After graduating from university, me and my frat mates went to the EU and basically we had a budget, we slept in these hostels. No privacy and you are sleeping/mixed with total strangers. I used to work cruise ships when I was 17/18 as a bellhop, and at least I knew the other 3 guys in the room.

I live in the hood. I worry about my property and not what my neighbors are doing.

Might be good time to sell and move to a place you like better/safer.

Its paid for and I don’t have to ask my neighbors for permission to do what I want on my own property.

I think AirBNB is dying a natural death.

I hope so.

Scumbucket new owners put one in next door to us.

Following a civil but unhappy discussion, they have directed their tenants to be quiet because of the neighbors, but, at best, it’s a continual annoyance and we have no idea who’s next door.

In this case the owner bought the home JUST TO RENT through Airbnb...

That’s what our neighbors did. They live in another state.

Even if the owners think that they know who’s renting through Airbnb, the renters can invite unknowns.

If we had wanted a parade of unknown people next door every dadgum day we would have bought somewhere else.

Also, even a simple and basic aspect of this changes the lives of neighbors for the worse. For example, vacation renters come and go often and all hours. Car doors slamming and people outside talking while they haul luggage in and out at odd hours happens continuously. That’s one of many issues.

Putting in an Airbnb is just not a thing I’d do to my neighbors.
